I took DOM with the intention of having useful introspection.

I took it on two occasions, the first time I took 2 tabs of 2.5-5mg each then another tab after about 6 hours. During that time I smoked some cigarettes, journaled, and drank some coke.

The sertraline (zoloft), an SSRI I take daily for depression and anxiety, likely kept me 'down' or 'grounded', but I still experienced substantial eye-open visuals, disordered thinking and a strong sense of angst as I thought about my personality, my negative tendencies and my life in general.

I felt the drug relatively quickly, but actual hallucinations didn't start for about 2 hours. Side effects included muscle tension and some jaw clenching. After 6 hours things were winding down but I felt there was more to do, so I took another tab. Hard to say if it did anything, but the trip did continue for a while.

Afterwards I felt 'unresolved', so after a couple days to recover I dosed again, 3 tabs at once. This time I took 10mg propranolol, a beta blocker and anxiety med, to help with the muscle tension.

I experienced serious tolerance to the DOM this time, with few visuals and milder effects in general, despite the higher dose. Nonetheless, for whatever reason, (maybe the media I exposed myself to, or just being in a more relaxed state before the trip, or the propranol, or avoiding nicotine) things clicked this time. I had some valuable insights into my nature and how I relate to the world, felt relieved and overall had a positive experience, with the angsty (but also insightful) first trip setting me up for the 'resolving' second one.

To summarize, DOM is strong and lets the mind wander freely for good or ill. Mileage may vary as far as duration, visuals and side effects, but it is certainly a useful tool for self-exploration, especially as SSRIs make tryptamine hallucinogens ineffective for me.
