The reason I'm writing this report is because I did have a dangerous experience with poppers that I want to warn others about. Although the danger did come from stupidity, but maybe someone else can benefit from the idiocy.

Last night I was pretty drunk - about 7 drinks in and I'm a lightweight. There was a dance event in town, house and techno music. I was pretty excited because there aren't a lot of dance events like this around here. So naturally I got pretty twisted, and I brought my poppers with me, because I love dancing with poppers.

Eventually I took a break to go outside and I bummed a cigarette from my friend G - a Marlboro no. 27 (this information is important later).

I was smoking my cig, and in an attempt to synergize, I started to open my container of poppers with my cig still in hand.
I started to open my container of poppers with my cig still in hand.
I thought that smoking a cig and doing some poppers would make me feel lightheaded in a way that I would like. I had forgotten, however, that nitrites are straight fumes, and that shit is extremely flammable.

As I opened the bottle, a bunch of flames materialized, engulfing my hand, which was holding the popper bottle (RUSH brand) and the cigarette. I flapped my hand around to put it out, and put the lid on the poppers. A circlet of flame lingered around the bottom of the lid of the bottle. I blew it out. House and techno beats were pumping in the background.

As I would later find out, this burn was part of a grander cosmic transaction that would involve cigarettes. I made my friend, J, hold both of these items as I took stock of the burn. It really hurt like shit. I went inside to get some cold water from the bar. Apparently J only saw part of the scene, and I'm certain that this one guy who was sitting on the stoop on the porch of the bar saw the entire situation from start to finish, from the look in his eyes as he watched my recovery. (An aside on poppers brands - I bought RUSH brand cuz they're cheaper, and they do the trick, but I do think that they are less 'giggly' than Jungle Juice. but all the body stuff is there.)

I was drunk as a skunk but I had my wits mostly about me. I was just more boisterous than usual and my balance wasn't the best. I spent the rest of the night out with my hand in a cold cup of water. We went to the corner store to get my friend A some Dill Pickle Lays, and I stopped at a bar on the way to re-up my ice water. We returned to the dance floor to hear the rest of the DJ's house set. My index finger has a second degree burn on it - a pretty gnarly blister.

The walk home is where the story comes together, and why I think my burn was part of a larger cosmic transaction. But that's all speculation. In a parking lot, I spotted an empty (or so I thought) pack of cigarettes on the ground. I always like to check, though, so I picked 'em up, and lo&behold - it is an entire pack of cigarettes, only one missing. and with TWO luckies. And they were Marlboro no. 27's, the same cigarette that consumed my hand.

So it seems like I made a deal with the devil or something, trading injury for luck. Kinda crazy right. And I had lots of intense dreams last night too. Maybe that has something to do with the poppers. But anyway - if you want to pursue the nitrite-nicotine drug synergy, I would recommend you vape or exercise extreme caution. do NOT put a cigarette near an open bottle of poppers.
