Product description

Peter Gabriel ~ Passion: Music For The Last Tem

Amazon.com

To call Peter Gabriel's Passion a pivotal recording in the development of the world music genre would be a significant understatement. What makes Passion so undeniably huge is, of course, its global reach but also its expert handling of what could've easily become polyglot babble. Vocalists Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N'Dour, and Baaba Mal bring strong Middle Eastern and African voicing to the project, and Balkan textures come via the ney flute and doudouk. But Gabriel is the glue, offering electronic ambient flows between the multiple streams. Gabriel also brings something even less tangible: an awesome visual imagination that takes often seamless sounds and makes them impress the listener with picturelike colors and phrasing. This is, however, far more than an ambient global mix. To be certain, the intertwined rhythms stand out but always do so both unto themselves and as brushstrokes on a larger canvas. Never mind that Passion helped launch North American careers for N'Dour and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, this is a stellar musical achievement by any standard. --Andrew Bartlett

This is nothing short of a masterpiece of world/new age music that also functions as a film score.
5 Stars
This is nothing short of a masterpiece of world/new age music that also functions as a film score.
When Martin Scorsese made the controversial The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), few would have thought that Peter Gabriel, a rock musician by trade, would compose the music for the picture. The result is a sensational, transcendent score that should be considered a masterwork.Winning the Grammy for Best New Age album, Gabriel’s Passion is more world music-esque in treatment, particularly his use of ethnic instruments (a look at the album booklet reveals a fascinating collection of more than twenty instruments used) such as the Armenian Doudouk, Kurdish Tenbur, Turkish Ney Flute, performed by world-class ethnic instrumentalists. The album features music from Scorsese’s film, but there is also additional music that completes the experience. I personally think that one needs to take into consideration that Gabriel’s work here is one of those rare moments in the history of cinema when an unlikely alliance yielded a perfect artistic endeavour.Scorsese was bold to tell Christ’s story (adapted from Nikos Kazantzakis’ novel) like never before, humanizing rather than deify him. The music, earthly and organic yet invigorating and inspiring, stems from the same school of thought. All 21 tracks in the album are top-notch and reward repeat listenings. I doubt there will be music created in this way for cinema ever again.Highlights:‘Of These, Hope’ – A track that starts with a cacophony of trumpet-like sounds that give way to a strong, rhythmic bass line. The ambient melody is simple but discernible, performed by synthesizers. This piece transports us across a vast land in search of hope, and perhaps, faith.‘A Different Drum’ – My favourite track. There’s a heavy use of percussion and ethnic vocalization that drives the music. But what gives me the chills is around the 1:30 mark, when the music soars to the skies with uplifting voice-work by Peter Gabriel. Stunning, to say the least.‘Troubled’ – This piece features some of the finest drumming and percussion work of the whole album.‘It is Accomplished’ – Accompanying the final scene of the film into the end credits, this enlightening piece is full of rejoice and hope. With a repeating melody, the track brings us a sense of victory over sin, and of unwavering faith and commitment to the cause. One of the most inspiring pieces of the album.Reviewed on Luxman Stereo Integrated Amplifier A-383, Marantz Compact Disc Player CD-63SE, and a pair of 1973 New Advent Loudspeakers.Sound Quality: Astounding recording with dynamic soundRating: 5 stars

Superb! All Gabriel's SACDs that I own are frankly the best sounding SACDs I own. From the Euro version Genesis 1970-1975 box, to PG 1, PG 2, Passion, and Shaking the Tree - the clarity, dynamics, lack of noise, etc is amazing and the cream of a large collection of SACDs. Only problem with any of them is that they are off the market - gone.

As to the SACD phenomena in general, I see a lot of reviews panning certain recordings because they aren't surround, or don't offer improvement to some ears over the CD counterpart, etc. To this I say that these reviews are missing the point of SACDs. It's a small market appealing to those that want media with a hugely expanded dynamic range and finer digital rendering of sound. Surround is an added bell or whistle, but not the objective of the SACD media. Some multi layer discs actually sound better as stereo than surround. Furthermore one really has to have made the investment in one's audio gear to make SACDs come to life. The better the system, and I mean the whole system (every component in the chain from player to speaker), the bigger the difference one will hear. Any weak link will pinch off detail and presence. My recommendation is that unless one has already justified a system expense on the order of, for example, blowing at least a few hundred bucks each interconnect cable, and components of the same order of quality, one is throwing money away buying SACDs, because you won't hear the quality of what your purchase contains anyway. Granted, there are some botched SACD production jobs, but for the most part, SACDs are worth the money if you have the equipment to render the sound contained in the disk. This applies to classical, jazz, pop, any genre of music.

It's a small niche in the music industry, therefore small production runs - which is why almost every Peter Gabriel SACD that was produced has already been purchased. And the aftermarket prices are through the roof, ~$100, if you bother to search them out.

I was very excited when I heard about this release - it seemed very lux and most likely out of my price range. Then Amazon Prime came to the rescue and I can assure you this package is stunning in every way. The spine of the gatefold is not oversized as I expected and right sleeve is custom-fitted to hold 2 of the 3 LPs. Inside the gatefold features stills from the film. The LPs are thick 180 gram with no surface noise before the music begins. The LPs run at 45 RPM which means each side can hold only 15 minutes of music and the album plays over 5 sides. Side six is a crown of thorns etching.

With my stereo systems EQ normalized to zero this LP sounds incredible. The volume is louder than any other album I have bought this year. This is an outstanding and easliy noticible sonic upgrade from the original-issue CD. There is also a download code included - I selected the high-resolution 24-bit WAV file.

Passion began as the soundtrack of the film The Last Temptation of Christ and may be Peter Gabriels best and most powerful album. Although Passion is layered with Eastern and African influences and instrumentation the music itself is mostly modern and Euro in its structure and is very approachable to the casual listener. While there are many singers featured on this album Gabriels voice and musical sensiblility stand out and in the end this is very much a Peter Gabriel album.

This remaster of the original is like night and day. I just bought the Martin Logan Motion 15i speakers and this music brings out how good the speakers are. Highly recommended CD.

Undoubtably one of the best soundtrack ever recorded, Peter Gabriel's "Passion" is a brilliant work. For those who know Gabriel only from his vocal work, this should be a revelation-- the building tension of "The Feeling Begins" opens the album and signals this is something unique-- Middle Eastern horn soloing over drones until tribal percussion with a decidingly modern feel arrives and eventually takes over the piece. This really sets the stage for the rest of the album.

The music on here is largely difficult to describe-- unique, quite a bit is drawn from Middle Eastern, Indian, and African music, but it has a decidingly modern edge, filled with synthesizers, western drum sounds and guitars.

Discussing individual pieces is difficult-- the album works best as a whole and as a statement. There are brilliant moments, I think immediately of the stunning, passionate vocals of "A Different Drum", the building, haunting tension fading into repetitive rhythmic figures of "Zaar", the incredible beauty of the horn and bass over swelling ambient haze of "With This Love", Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's immense, pained, wails on "Passion"... the list of great moments goes on.

If you're a fan of interesting and unique music, you should probably own this record. Essential.

This is a movie soundtrack album that Peter Gabriel did years ago. It has an eclectic Middle Eastern "world beat" feel [from back when that term was new.]

Peter Gabriel, dig it? When is the last time you heard anything from him that wasn't listenable? An ex-GF turned me on to this album [shout out to Julie, you crazy hot ginger babe!] and years after I played it for a new GF who's from Egypt who loved it & said Peter Gabriel got it right.

Put this in rotation w/ Enigma & Amethystium & you won't go wrong: this is music for your head, not for shaking the tree.

I really like this album the music instrumentation and soundscapes are amazing very ethereal plus the 3 LP set is half-speed mastered also cut at 45 RPM as a result the sonics are outstanding further more it's also a "Limited Numbered Edition"! The pressing is one of THE quietest that I have and absolutely FLAT plus a free hi-rez download is included I believe in 24/96 or 24/192 your choice! If you're a Peter Gabriel fan this will give you another side to his genius along as a superb musician and technician. The CD is less expensive, however, it won't be able to match the sonics of the LP's but should be good none the less - I might also order one for the car!

P.S. Very highly recommended - also see Michael Fremer's review in "Analogue Planet".
