Has there been a decline in the use of psychedelics in the last few years?
Q: Do you know if there has been a decline in psychedelic drug use in the last few years (particularly among the late-teens, early twenties age groups)? I'm talking about LSD, DMT, mushrooms, the hard stuff and not just pot.

A: There's a few good places to look up statistics about trends in usage. The one that seems most relevant to this question is the 'Monitoring the Future Survey' a government funded study conducted yearly of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders.



According to the latest data (2000), the current rate of LSD use by high school students (6.6%) is approximately equal to the level it was at in 1993 (6.8\%), but that level rose between 1993 and 1996 (6.8\% - 8.8\%) and then dropped again between 1996 and 2000 (8.8\% - 6.6\%). The trends for Hallucinogens in general look similar (they don't keep specific data about DMT or Mushroom use.
