What is 1,4-Butanediol?

I've heard many different things about 1,4 butanediol and I just need to get things straight. What is 1,4BD exactly? Is it converted into GHB inside the body? Are its effects similar to GHB? |

1,4-Butanediol, or butylene glycol, is a chemical which is structurally very similar to GHB (as well as to the main ingredient in antifreeze). See chem-compare for a comparison of the molecules. The effects of GHB and 1,4-B are also very similar. Some people describe subtle differences in effects, but these differences seem to vary depending on the person.
We believe that 1,4-B is eventually converted to GHB by the liver, but there is anecdotal evidence that it may cause worse side effects than GHB. It should definitely not be considered a safe substitute for GHB, as there is even less clinical evidence showing safety than there is for GHB. Unfortunately many people have turned to it since GHB has been made illegal in many countries over the past few years.
