Do dried poppy pods contain extractable opiates?
Q: |
I recently saw dried poppy pods in a store. Do they contain extractable opiates, and can they be made into tea? |

A: |
Dried poppy pods which are sold in craft stores for flower arrangements are often from the plant P. somniferum, more commonly known as the opium poppy. These do contain raw opium even in dried form. Unfortunately, these dried pods are often coated in some sort of preservative which should not be ingested.
Some people have described a method of using these dried pods for their opium content, by crushing and grinding the entire pod with a knife, mortar and pestle, or if possible, in a coffee grinder. The ground pods can then be steeped in water to extract the opium. Many people report nausea with ingested opium tea...especially when made from dried pods.
