I'm considering taking Zyban (bupropion) to stop smoking. Do you know anything about the success of this method?
Q: Im considering taking Zyban(Bupropion) to stop smoking. After reading several sheets on it from Glaxo and several other sources im finding the overall "complete" information lacking. There seem to be no "sucess" stories of usage "stories". Though also being a perscription drug that certainly doesn't calm my nerves about it's reliability or over safeness. I searched the site and found very little information for this drug. Do you know of any sites/stories/experiences that I could find on the web or otherwise. I appreciate your time and truly do find your webpage useful and helpful. Health comes through information not through fear. thanks,
//valder

A: I've added a few more references to our bupropion page. One of these discusses the results of a study from 1997 in which 615 people participated. It found that there was more than twice the level of success in those using 300 mg bupropion/day compared to the control group who was not given bupropion (44.2% compared to 19%). Lower levels of bupropion had lower levels of success, but still higher than the control group.

Unfortunately, this is the only reference I was able to find about the success rates for treatment of nicotine addiction with Zyban. Zyban was only approved for this use by the FDA in 1997, so there is still only limited data available. Hope this is of some use.
