Are there any substances that are legal in the U.S.that I could use to treat severe pain?
Q: Are there any substances that are legal in the U.S.that I could use to treat severe pain?

A: Because of the addictive potential of pain medications, the most effective pain killers are generally scheduled substances. Pain management in the U.S. can be a somewhat tricky issue because doctors are afraid of being accused of overprescribing pain medications as well as being wary of those trying to get controlled substances for recreational use.

However, if you are experiencing "severe pain", there is no reason why your physician shouldn't be willing and able to prescribe a pain killer for you. If your doctor refuses, consider finding a new one.
