I was prescribed Fioricet [acetaminophen (325 mg), butalbital (a barbiturate, 50 mg), and caffeine (40 mg)] in the generic form for my migraines. My Imitrex prescription usually kicks them out of my head, but occasionally I need the 'big guns' to get relief.

I woke up with a fever and a pre-migraine headache at about 4 AM this morning, and had troubled fever dreams until about noon. I woke up with a full blown migraine and as Imitrex is usually intended to cut off a migraine before it goes crazy I decided to take the Fioricet. I was apprehensive as I had been warned in no uncertain terms that they were very addictive and she had battled with other patients because she refused to give them more than a monthly refill.

So, in pain and anxious, I took the first pill (the full dosage is two pills) at around 1 PM. I began to feel a little something around 1:30, but was still in a great deal of pain, so I waited until two (when I began to more fully feel the effects of the drug) and took the second one. My family has a history of sensitivity to drugs (I hallucinate slightly on a low dose of Benadryl and my thankfully short stint on Paxil involved words sliding off the page of the computer at work) so I was worried about the potential side effects as the hallucinations I have experienced on pharmaceutical shave been less than pleasant.

Around 3 my pain was almost entirely gone, my neck was still slightly stiff and sore but the worst of the pain had evaporated. My hands felt (and still feel, now around 4 PM) heavy and somewhat clumsy, an almost drunkish feeling but without a loss of mental clarity. My body feels relaxed and heavy, a loose feeling I have once or twice felt on higher doses of Valerian and melatonin. My emotional state is calm and very chill, not quite flat but not many bumps in it either.

In short, I feel good. I have a number of things broken, strained or damaged in my body and I feel quite free from them at this moment. This is not a spectacular drug, but it is efficacious in terms of pain relief and relaxation...

also, it would go wonderfully with some lovely heady bud.
