This plant [Arctostaphylos uva-ursi] grows abundantly on the forest floor here, so I decided to try smoking some pure leaf. I picked only the young tender leaves and growing tips, allowed them to dry until the leaves are crisp and no longer have a chlorophyl smell. The leaves were then gently crushed and rolled into a cigarette.
Although the leaves themselves have no real aroma, the smoke has a very pungent yet pleasant smell. The inhaled smoke is rich and mild with a pleasant herbal flavor. I must say, it was very pleasant experience. Effects were immediate but of a short duration (30min). I would describe the effects as mildly hypnotic with a slight body load. About five minutes after smoking, I found myself in what I would call a trance-like state that lasted several minutes. I found myself staring at a tree and thinking how beautiful it was and completely forgot what I was doing. It only lasted a few minutes, but it was quite significant. As the effect waned, I found that I was giggling because I had completely forgotten why I was out on the porch until I abruptly realized I still had the burning 'roach' between my fingers. I also noticed a slight tremor. The effects tapered off over the next 10-15 minutes leaving we with a pleasant stoned-like feeling for another hour.
In conclusion, I am very pleased with the mild and short-duration effects of this plant. I will certainly continue to experiment with it, blending it with other selected smoking herbs as I believe that the combined effect may be quite good.
