I first heard about 5-HTP a few months prior to my experience through a friend T telling me about our other friend O taking it and it making him feel more focused and generally pretty uplifted/chilled out. I've been going through a pretty rough patch concerning my mental well-being so I was willing to try pretty much anything to help which was when I remembered 5-HTP. So, after deliberating about it for a while I finally got round to buying a bottle of 90 x 100mg capsules two days ago from a health store for around £16.

I currently take 100mg of lamotrigine as a mood stabiliser, 40mg of fluoxetine, and a generic shop-bought multivitamin. I did my research before and, from what I've read, it doesn't seem like 5-HTP and lamotrigine/fluoxetine react negatively in any way apart from possible serotonin syndrome (but at the dosage I'm taking I don't think that would happen). So at around 12:45pm I read the bottle which instructed me to take between 1-3 tablets a day on an empty stomach. I hadn't eaten since around 8pm the previous night (which may explain the negative effects)

so I proceeded to take one 100mg capsule of 5-HTP and set about writing up lecture notes.

About 5 minutes in I noticed I felt more focused on my work and I was powering through and writing more than I would have without that feeling. I had developed a slight headache but that may have been due to being a little dehydrated. Around 30 minutes later I finished my notes up as I was pretty hungry and getting that almost queasy feeling I get when hungry. I rolled a joint (I always like a smoke before eating) and went downstairs to make some lunch. The queasy feeling got progressively worse and I began to get those awful cold sweats along with a burning forehead. Eventually I went and knelt in front of the toilet and forced myself to be sick, but of course only a tiny bit of bile came up. I grabbed a drink of water and poured my now-ready soup into a bowl and headed upstairs still feeling awful.

Now let me point out I am a seasoned weed smoker, I usually get through two 20 bags a week so I thought smoking a joint would make me feel better. Oh man, was I wrong. I felt like a weed virgin - my head felt cold and I was sweating profusely feeling sicker than ever, and I looked incredibly pale. I took a few spoonfuls of soup and a mouthful of water thinking maybe it was just because I was so hungry. Nope. I grabbed my bin and deposited into it the soup, water, and some more stomach acid. As soon as I was sick I felt so much better, I even managed to finish my soup! After this episode I felt pretty chilled out and was able to enjoy being stoned.

While I was throwing up I was thinking to myself 'I will never try this shit again!' But now I think I might because it does have benefits, just probably not right before sparking up. I would also eat something 2-3 hours before taking any 5-HTP so my stomach's not quite as empty!
