I love this plant, and my love has a healthy fear woven into it. Kind of like the 'holy dread' that people of old might have felt in the presence of higher beings. One whiff of this mate-smelling wise spirit-herb evokes an excited 'holy shit' from my voice-box. Weeks of preparation have led up to this moment. (One really ought to put some thoughtfulness into a 'salvia ceremony' well ahead of time.) I sit cross-legged on my cushion. Sage smoke has been wafted into the air, a Pandora station (Ben Benjamin) has been selected. I do not want a commercial to come on during my session (I have the free version of Pandora); my rule is to wait calmly until the first commercial break has ended, and light it up when the music resumes. The music resumes. A compelling beat begins the song, and I am off. I may be a lightweight with other herbs, but now is the time for massive lungfuls. I am after a proper interaction with this fine representative from the plant realm. She arrives.

She begins characteristically with a systematic scanning of the immediate spiritual-physical environment , line by line, vector by vector, beginning from the right (north), tracing an arc upwards, above my head. The dog on the couch leaps off suddenly at the precise moment when the 'scan-line' reaches her. (The response of pets to the salvia visitation bears further study.) What the scanning reveals are parts of my living biography, surrounding me in the soul-world. I, like all human beings, am a true cosmonaut. We have traveled far and wide; and our physical abode is one of several homes. As the arc of survey progresses upward, I am commended for being so interested in these very interrelationships and psycho-spiritual matters. Later, I am reprimanded painfully for having let my voice become something less than what it could be, as regards representing myself and my strengths. Painful though it is, I am comforted by the fact that one's faculty of speech is such a powerful and important gift - one so strong that adversarial beings, it appears, are interested in seeing it misused.

As the living survey reaches the apex, I am enfilled with the basic awesomeness and mystery of consciousness, and this moment ushers in a mighty affirmation: 'OH FUCK YES!' The downward arc begins and I distinctly feel the presence of beings, much mightier and wiser than I, standing behind me. In my interpretation, they are part of a Holy Family - a league of good guides who are solicitous of our health and evolution. I soak it up. My head is on the floor now, out of thankful reverence and stupendous awe. I stay there for a while. When I am ready to stand up, I begin to dance fiercely all over the room, charged with a marvelous sentiment: the cosmos is unendingly mysterious, and good.
