I've been on Clonazepam at the dosage of 2mg, 3 times a day, for approximately the past 6 years. I would thus like to impart my experience with this particular medication in general and what I've gained and lost from it.
I began my journey with Clonazepam around 6 years ago, when my anxiety became out of control and I was hospitalized. My psychiatrist figured it would be a good idea to get me started on something stronger than Lorazepam and have it be taken on a daily schedule. Thus, he prescribed me Clonazepam.
Clonazepam I've found is different from other benzodiazepines in that its effects are more drawn out and not as prominent as the shorter acting benzos. I have trying a few shorter acting ones, such as Xanax and Lorazepam, and to give a comparison, The shorter acting ones are like drive-by's of relief that last 3 to 6 hours, while clonazepam is like a warm hug for about 10 hours.
Originally 6 years ago I was started out on a low dose, 0.5mg twice a day. Of course my tolerance increased, so it was raised to three times a day, then 1mg three times a day, and now I've been at 2mg three times a day for the past 4 years. Over this time frame I have noticed things both good and bad, and I will impart them in two seperate categories.
The Good: I am able to function much more than without them. They help keep my emotions in check as well as providing a bit of a mental buffer against the raw feeling of reality having me by the throat. I can certainly say that without clonazepam, I would be a total loose canon, so to speak.
The Bad: I have noticed a bit of decline in cognitive function. This could be in part to the medical marijuana I've been prescribed also and its short term effects on memory, so I am open to that. But the past year, I have noticed short term memory issues such as going to say something and completely forgetting what I wanted to impart before I could speak. I have also had experiences where I get up to do something and forget what I am to do before I get the chance to do it. I have to think very hard in this situation, to remember what I was aiming to do. This only happens once in a while, and honestly, I smoke medically marijuana throughout the majority of the day so it probably has a lot to do with that.
Conclusion: All in all I'd say in a retrospective sense it has been of benefit to me up until this date. I am still able to be creative, I am still able to engage my career as a writer, and I am still able to preform sketch comedy. Nothing has really changed badly enough to warrant any concern, and I feel as though I would be an ugly person without it. So in that sense, it is helpful. Tis' better to be comfortably numb than to have nervous breakdowns on a regular basis.
