I've been on Effexor for about two years for slight anxiety. It really helps out. I do have the side effect of increased weight gain (I use to weigh 145) and dry mouth on occasion.

I've learned over these two years that I simply don't get a buzz from alcohol anymore. In fact, there was one occasion with my wife in which I woke up the day after a party and was unable to remember anything about the later half of the party- my wife said I acted a 'little drunk' but otherwise seemed fine and never seemed to pass out.

That was a few months ago. It doesn't matter what I drink- wine, whiskey, beer- I just don't get a buzz. If I drink more, nothing seems to happen. Went out just last night, drank about 9 beers over a 3 hour period, and was just real tired by the time I arrived home. Never really got a good buzz at all. Venlaxafine must be blocking something.

I also enjoyed the occasional low dose hydrocodone before I began taking Effexor. Luckily I was sensitive to hyrdos so I couldn't take a lot or I'd get sick, so it allowed me to use it recreationally without getting addicted. Well, since I've been on Effexor, I get no high from a hydro whatsoever. Which really sucks, because the low feel good energy I get from it is my favorite, even over mj or alcohol. I'd be good with one 10mg hyrdo for the night over 9 beers or a joint or three.
