My friend S wanted to try metocin as her first 'strong' psychedelic. She smoked weed and drank alcohol, but hasn't used any other drugs before. We figured it would be a good idea since metocin has a more friendly headspace and is generally easier to handle than the other psychedelics I had on hand. I headed up to her room with a couple 10mg capsules; we each took one, then put on Alice in Wonderland (2010) on her laptop. The time is around midnight.
Set and setting was close to ideal. We were in a good mood after getting back from a hookah lounge. We had no obligations the next day. The timing of the trip concerned me slightly, because tripping at midnight would keep me up for quite a while, but I decided that it would be worth whatever damage it did to my sleep schedule.
20 minutes in, I began to feel strange sensations in my stomach, a normal indicator that a trip was about to begin. S said that she felt a bit different in her head, but could not elaborate. Pizza arrived, and we ate. At the time, I forgot that food may affect the trip, especially because the drug was probably not fully absorbed yet.

After about an hour and a half, the nausea had disappeared and the effects have gotten a bit stronger for me. Closing my eyes would result in seeing something akin to lights on a dance floor, albeit much dimmer. A major difference between metocin and other psychedelics that I noticed is that the visuals are not tied to thought or emotion with this drug - for example, on even low doses of acid, every visual effect would feel profound and emotional. Metocin, on the other hand, doesn't produce this connection, making it feel less deep. Great for a movie night, but probably not as well suited for spiritual exploration, at least with the doses I've tried. S still felt completely unaltered, and neither of us could think of any reasons why.
2 hours in, the movie was finished. I headed back to my room to finish the trip and see if I could go any deeper, while S went to bed, still completely sober. With the room lit, tracers and very mild color shifting could be observed. I then turned off the lights and laid in bed with my eyes closed, trying to go deeper into the trip. I spent about 2 more hours lying there, having strange, but not profound thoughts, while the visuals displayed themselves independently of what I had going on in my mind, with no connection whatsoever. 4 hours after I dosed, at 4am, the trip began to die down. Psychedelics usually have this effect on me where I can't sleep for a few hours after the trip ends, and this was no exception - I ended up falling asleep at 6am, two hours after the end of the trip.
It seems that S didn't have any effects that night. I assume that the initial bit where she felt little 'a bit different' can be attributed to placebo, especially because nothing further happened to her afterward. I'm not sure what we did wrong. Maybe it was the pizza?
For me, the trip was very casual and fun, but it was missing what I consider a very important part of the psychedelic experience: the connection between visuals and thoughts that other psychedelics produce. My previous metocin trip at 20mg didn't produce that effect either. I suspect that higher doses would remedy that; I guess I'll find out in the future.
