The Strange and Beautiful World of Salvia
I'll start by saying that the only drugs I've ever used are cannabis, alcohol, and now salvia. My alcohol usage is extremely infrequent (only once have I had more than 2 drinks). marijuana I've smoked slightly more but still fairly infrequently... I haven't smoked it in 5 months now. Salvia was the only substance affecting me for both experiences given here. I take no herbs or supplements.
I ordered 2 grams of Salvia 5x fortified leaves off of the internet to share with a few friends over Thanksgiving break. Used up all of it but the first gram was smoked inefficiently and the second was split up amongst 5 people... 3 of which did it multiple times (I'm in that group of 3).
Two good friends and I went out late Wednsday night to a forest by the river, an area we know pretty well and typically go to for this sort of thing. Our plan was for the driver to go first, that way he'd regain good control of his motor skills first and we'd be able to go somewhere. After the first person the other two would go in succession, with at least one person coherent enough to watch over the people tripping at all times. For the sake of keeping everything legal we used a totally virgin pipe. Unfortunately the piple wasn't very well suited to Salvia, it was hard to get the flame down to the substance, you couldn't see the Salvia inside the bowl and the filter wasn't fine enough.
We didn't have any precise methods of measuring out hits. We pretty much just stuck 2 pinches or so in the bowl and went. I'll only describe my own experiences because I probably wouldn't do the experiences of my friends justice.
I said very little for about 10 minutes before I smoked and tried to concentrate on various issues in my life.
I am an extremely clumsy MF, especially when it comes to smoking anything, so my friend Eric worked the lighter for me. I took what I felt was a small hit because I didn't think I could handle a large one (Eric told me that he thought I took a big hit) and held it for maybe 25 seconds.
I haven't had much experience with weed (or Salvia for that matter) but the Salvia tasted very much like weed does to me. So similar that I wouldn't be able to tell the two apart. Chris and Eric found it only mildly similar in taste. We all agreed that it wasn't nearly as unpleasant as it is sometimes made out to be. Using a breathmint prior to smoking might help a bit.
What happened next was pretty intense. Before I even exhaled I saw everything starting to spin and I felt like I was sinking into the rock I was laying on. I closed my eyes and saw more colors and more spinning. I started laughing.... really, really hard. I have never felt so absurdly euphoric and funny before.
I have never felt so absurdly euphoric and funny before.
I didn't know what was going on because I thought that salvia didn't bring any sort of euphoria. As I kept laughing harder and harder. Eric was trying to find out if I wanted another hit. I'm pretty sure that I did want more, but all of my thoughts felt incredibly disconnected with each other. I started to make hand guestures at my face which were correctly interpreted, Eric stuck the pipe in my mouth and I took another hit.
I didn't feel any dramatic change with the second hit, but at that point I had no idea what was going on. In my mind I saw Eric coming at me as a cross between a clown and the pringles chips man. He had on a spinning bow tie that was somehow connected to a bunch of spinning presents that were flying around. There were lots of rapidly blinking colors and polkadots and such. It ended pretty quickly. Afterwards I felt a mild sense of goodness and contentment and everything looked remarklably clear and vivid. I had no more hallucinations afterwards.
After that we each tried again until we had finished the bag (I wish we would have saved it because none of us got much more out of it). I didn't have any hallucinations again, it just made me feel sort of stoned. For the rest of the night we all felt good. Everything, especially stars, looked crystal clear.
We tried again last night (Saturday) in a vastly different setting: a party of sorts at another friend's house. This time it was the three of us with two more people.
This time we smoked out of a water bong. I felt that it worked really well, I don't know if I'd want to do salvia with a pipe again because the bong worked so well. I'm betting that a gravity bong would do the trick as well. The bowl we used was fairly caked with cannabis resin so it's possible that THC contributed slightly to my experience.
We had 7 people in a fairly dark room.
I took a huge bonghit and held it for 30 seconds. The beginning felt very similar to the first time. I saw spinning and colors and felt like I was going to crack up laughing again. This sort of dissapointed me because I didn't want the same experience as before, but all of my worries quickly left.
I saw and felt so many things that it's hard for me to describe even a fraction of them. I did it three times that night and I'll try to paraphrase the experiences using some common themes.
After the first hit I felt like I was flying along in a sky filled with rectangular tiles of different colors. The tiles changed colors rapidly. There was a strange 50's era TV commercial sort of music going on with a woman singing some strange jingle. I wish I could remember it. I felt no connection with my body or that what I was seeing was in any way fake. At this point people in the room started talking and I became vaguely aware that my head was pressed against the wall and that I was grinning from ear to ear and laughing every once in a while. My head also rolled around along with the motion I percieved to be happening.
I was afraid the trip was going to end because I got distracted. I saw the stuff I was flying with being sucked into a baby elephant. I was sure that that when I reached the elephant the trip would end. I was wrong. The elephant became some sort of vortex. At this point I think it felt like I was no longer part of this space but merely an observer. The vortex was stationary and I watched the squares go spinning into it. The squares soon turned into large bits of cereal on a pure white background and the music I was hearing turned into an advertisement for cereal, something I must have invented in my mind. The music in my mind ended eventually but the vortex was present for what seemed to be a long time. The things flowing into it changed rapidly.
After a while the vortex changed into rolling hills zipping towards me which were covered in 2 dimensional plant shapes that interlocked. Tesselations were a pretty common theme that night. The leaves rapidly changed colors between red and green. I'm not sure how long the hill stage lasted but eventually I opened my eyes.
I felt very stoned afterwards and my friend Chris and I left the room and tried to explain our experiences to 2 other friends who weren't going to use the Salvia. I don't think we made any sense at all, we seemed pretty hillarious to ourselves.
A while later I took another, smaller hit. This time I never felt disconnected from my body. The series of visions that followed went by the same themes as with the first hit: rapid change, spinning, blinking colors, tiles and tesselations. Although this trip was not as intense, I found that I was able to keep hallucinating for a much longer time than before.
The third trip I had that night was probably equal in intensity to the first time. All of the themes I mentioned before were present. I don't remember any specific visions from this trip because I saw so many things. I think the aftereffects of this trip are very noteable. For at least an hour after the intense portion of the trip ended I was able to have visuals just by closing my eyes. I had strong visuals even while riding in the backseat of a car with the radio on and people talking.
All in all, Salvia has been a very worthwhile thing for me.
Salvia has been a very worthwhile thing for me.
I have never experienced anything like it. I don't think I will do it often, but I will do it again. Other than a loss of coordination after smoking I felt no ill effects at all.
I am not a spiritual person, and Salvia did not seem to be a spiritual experience for me.
I would have a sober person around and wait at least 3 hours before driving; I made the mistake of driving about 2 hours after my last hit the second night and almost ran a red light because I couldn't figure out where to stop.
Also I would use it in a dark, quiet, familiar place with people you trust. I found it worked best for me when I closed my eyes and sat back immediately after taking the hit (before exhaling). Sometimes it takes a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes. It helped me if I thought of some kind of simple yet interesting image. The Salvia takes over from there!
