It was a rainy day in New York City, where I was spending my vacation, and I wanted to get high. I spent several hours browsing the internet until I came upon a completely legal and common substance I could take: dramamine. Sure, it produced vivid hallucinations, but that’s what I was looking for. The reality was that I had no idea what I was getting into, even through days of research. Up to that point, I had already tried alcohol, marijuana, and most opiates and anti-anxiety meds, but not any deliriants or hallucinogens. I figured trying something to give me hallucinations would be a cool new experience, so I went out to buy some dramamine at a local store. I took one to see if I was allergic and I wasn’t. I decided to try it after dinner that night. I taped a little paper on my door that said “It’s not real, stay in here!” to keep me from doing something stupid and getting caught. At about 7:30, I was ready.

7:30 PM: I take my first dose of 6 pills of dramamine, or 300 mgs. I sit back and wait for something to happen.

7:43 PM: Extremely loud popping noises coming from nowhere. Very odd.

7:50 PM: Knocking noises coming from inside my wall. I notice my first hallucination: my hand sanitizer has waves flowing on its surface somehow.

8:00 PM: There appears to be a small fish swimming in the hand sanitizer.

8:10 PM: I get hit by a rush, perception shifts noticeably.

9:00 PM: Auditory hallucinations continue. More noticeable now, people calling my name and knocking that don’t exist.

9:30 PM: I pop 4 more pills, bringing the total to 500 mg ingested.

At some point at this time, I take a five hour energy to try to stay awake. The pills made me tired.

10:00 PM: My grandparents are in my room, until they aren’t. I was watching them have a conversation until I realized this was impossible, and they vanished.

10:15 PM: I notice that I need to urinate every 20-30 minutes. Very annoying.

10:30 PM: First extreme visuals occur. I have a window in my room which, since my lights are on, has a reflection of my room on it. In this reflection I suddenly see two men grabbing books of my shelf and talking. There appear to be more people on top of my shelf somehow. This is not occuring in my actual room, though. Knocking continues.

10:45 PM: A little horse statue on my windowsill is walking.

11:20 PM: Hallucinations of those people in my window continue.

11:40 PM: I talk to someone in my room until I realize that I spent 10 minutes talking to a picture of my great grandmother. She seemed to lean out of the frame somehow to speak to me.

11:50 PM: I notice that there’s a soccer game being broadcasted on my clock. This game remains on the clock for the rest of my experience.

12:30 AM: Darting shadow hallucinations, almost like cats made of nothing, increase in frequency. I notice that there is someone staring at me from the window reflection version of my room. They don’t seem to like me much.

12:45-2 AM: I drift in and out of consciousness, seeing people stand above me at times and at others I am talking to pictures or people who I later realize weren’t there. At one point, I just sort of found myself to be talking to some non-existent person and had no idea when I had woken up or when the “conversation” had begun. This is around the time that I begin to feel alarmed.

3:24 AM: I had fallen asleep at some point, but I wake up to a sound that horrified me to no end. From right next to my bed there came a sound that seemed to be that of dozens of wet frogs writhing on top of each other, producing fast-paced wet slapping noises. The sound was extremely alarming and made me want to vomit. Whatever the source of this was moved under my bed and out the other side, entering one of my cabinets. I never saw what was making these noises, but they resumed at random times from within a cabinet. I am beyond horrified.

3:40 AM: Gray paint begins to appear all over my room, as if an invisible person was painting it. This “person” never seemed to finish, though, as they left only splotches of gray.

~4:00 AM: Shadows continue darting. When I look away from pictures on the wall, they blow around as if there was a breeze. I also see some kid in the reflection room eating a box. It was also around this time that a person in a painting simply got up and walked out. I am curled up on one side of my bed by now, and I desperately wanted this to be over.

4:15 AM: The room shakes violently in my peripheral vision. I keep thinking I’m eating something, but then I realize I’m chewing nothing. I again begin drifting in and out of hallucination land. Whenever I become distracted, I begin talking to people before I realize it can’t be real and they vanish. This happens various times.

4:30 AM: Everything is intensifying. My clothes seem to be breathing in my suitcase. This is also around the time that an 8 foot tall woman walks out of my wall and through me. When I look at that woman and turn around, a dead version of my mom is standing over me. I am now panicking.

4:45 AM: I think I must be coming down. Lights flickering, strange tingling in extremities.
~5 AM: I talk to my mom and she walks out of my room, although my mom isn’t on this trip. I see some man working outside my window. He is covered in ash.

~5:30 AM: I become convinced that my room was underwater. Saw an octopus outside my window. Lights in my room spin. At some point here, I fall asleep for good.

After effects: None that I noticed, except that I was hallucinating slightly all the next day.

All in all, I was horrified by this. Besides the fact that I was terrified during the trip, I actually had many hallucinations the next day. It really fucked me up and made me question reality forever. If I could use one word to describe this, it would be “horrific”. I could not tell what was and what wasn't real. It’s not fun in the least. I pray that this drug stops being used “recreationally”, if you can even call it that. Definitely the worst drug experience I’ve ever had.
