First things first: I live in a country where Modafinil is still completely legal, requires no prescription and is sold in some local sports nutrient shops as a dietary supplement (i.e. has no official drug status). This is why I decided to try it to fight my sleepness and brain fog during the daytime after lack of sleep. After all, this is what it was designed for.
I ordered 60 Modafinil capsules from a local manufacturer, each capsule containing 100 mg, entire pack being worth about $28.5. I don't know whether this was on purpose or not, but this kind of capsules is especially hard to swallow.
Anyway, my first experience was not so good because I messed up the timing. It was about 11:50 AM and I took a pill with coffee. I knew I had to give it an hour or two to absorb, but even before that, I felt sweat on my palms and fingers and itching of the right hand. It all disappeared just as quickly and suddenly at it appeared. My brain was the only place where changes continued to happen. I managed to keep mental clarity until 00:30 AM and still didn't want to sleep.
However, after the midnight, other adverse effects appeared. My heart rate rose, fingers got sweat again, and I felt like my body began to freeze. The biggest problem was I still was concentrated but I couldn't concentrate on anything other than those feelings. I became a bit scared but managed to get asleep after 02:00 AM.
I can't call it normal sleep though: when I opened my eyes at 07:30 AM, I realized I was still under Mod influence. And I knew that it would wear off at any moment and I'd fall asleep right from my feet at the office or when getting to my workplace. And this was the last thing I wanted. So, after a bit of hesitation, I took another capsule at about 08:40 AM.
But still, I caught great sleepiness at about 09:30 AM. I realized that the old capsule had finally worn off but the new one hadn't started acting yet. I had a hard time getting to the office. But when I did, I started to concentrate again. The feeling of being struck by a wooden hammer remained in the background but I wasn't bothered about it too much during the following working day.
The only problem afterwards was in the evening when I got a sudden headache during the call with our customers. And then I realised the true value of Mod: I was still able to clearly express my thoughts and perceive theirs despite the headache. I had never experienced anything like this before.
When I went to sleep, I had never slept so deeply before. And on the next day, my sleep was even better.
What did I do wrong on my first encounter with Modafinil? Well, it was the timing. I had taken it too late in the day and this way it messed up my circadian rhythm instead of helping fixing it. But the second time was already completely different.
In about 15 days, I had to go hiking for quite a long distance. And I also had to get to the train in the very early morning. And I failed to sleep well once again that night. And I already had excluded coffee from my menu, because it became one of the suspects guilty of my sleeplessness. So, Modafinil remained the only option in this situation, and I took 2 pills at 06:20 AM and went to the train.
This time, it did wonders increasing my endurance during hiking. No adverse effects whatsoever. I had some headache in the late evening that day but my mind was clear all the time even when my legs already started hurting.
Nowadays, I occasionally use Modafinil when I know that I'm going to have some hard work and I cannot afford any sleepiness these days. When boosted with Piracetam or Pramistar, the effects are even better. However, I remembered three things:
1. Although some researches put this drug into stimulants group, Modafinil isn't about stimulation, highness or speeding. It's about keeping my mental clarity at the level natural to me, regardless of the circumstances.
2. Timing is everything. I do not take Modafinil late in the day, otherwise I'll struggle to get back to my normal circadian rhythm.
3. I do not take Mod too often, keeping in mind that it was designed for high-stress operations of special armed forces. If I have to have no sleep for several days, I must take a break afterwards. Otherwise I'll develop tolerance. I take breaks at least 4 or 5 days long after each session to ensure that tolerance will not be developed.
Overall impression: when taken responsibly, Modafinil is a great performance booster.
