The Addictive Nature of O-Desmethyltramadol

Now that opiates are making headlines as the big thing that's going to get your kids like some chemical boogeyman (junior's own penchant for drugs doesn't seem to be quite as demonized, but I digress...), doctor's have become very stringent when it comes to prescribing pain medications. Controlled one's anyway...

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and have had it for most of my adult life, so while getting pain meds RXed isn't that hard for me, like William S. Burroughs once said, sometimes I get a little ahead of my dosage. It's poorly reflected upon the patient if I ask for more pills, and the street price has skyrocketed for RX painkillers on the street, so I needed another option; the first place I checked was my preferred RC vendor for some experimental opioids. I tried a few. U-47700, Tramadol, and the already converted O-desmethyltramadol...my problem child.

Tramadol, and the drug it converts to--O-desmethyltramadol--aren't in the same drug Schedule as most other opiates in Canada, and is thus freely available through certain RC vendors. O-desmethyltramadol is--contrary to a lot of literature--quite potent and very addictive. More so than other opiates and I've been up and down the list. The withdrawal is hellish, worse than Dilaudid or Opium. I was quite the junkie at the time though, and didn't pay much mind to whatever other effects I was experiencing as long as I got the waking dream of opiation, good and proper. That's not to say I didn't take notice of how viciously addictive O-desmethyltramadol was, or it's short half life, I just didn't care.

O-DSMT is quite strong, and I began dosing pretty reasonably; 50mgs or so would leave me fine like wine, but the availability, tolerance, short-ish acting nature of and relative inexpense of the drug drove my doses up and up until I was squeezing 300mgs into a gelcap. Doses like this are where addiction to O-DSMT became reinforced and soon my RX pain pills were good for nothing but a top up.

I eventually ran out of drugs and the cash to pay for them, and went into the O-desmethyltramadol kick; a nightmare...opium was a breeze to withdrawal from by comparison. Where the idea that O-DSMT is less potent than even Codeine comes from must come from skewed studies, because I've nodded every which way there is to nod, and the sweatiest, nastiest, Jimmy-legged, bowel-churning withdrawal I ever experienced was hands down O-desmethyltramadol. While broke, I kicked the Tram one last time and never touched it again, my RX is enough and pushing further is just plain stupid for anyone, let alone someone with real pain issues.

O-DSMT is a devil in disguise.
