Unfortunately, my first attempt at growing wasn’t a huge success. Perhaps the temperature was too cold. Anyhow, I dried what I got with warm air, much like I did with Amanita muscaria, until the shrooms were bone dry. Now the fruits of my labor were sitting in two little glasses, for two weeks now, waiting for the day I’d like to try them.

I considered the early evening of a Saturday would be a good time to start. So I carefully measured 3.0g of dried substance with my precision scale. I was in a good mood, safely at home, it was about 8pm. I looked at the small heap and had a glass juice next to it to wash it down, should the taste be bad. But it wasn’t really necessary. The taste was kind of typical for mushrooms.

So...I was laying on my bed, using my mobile phone, waiting for something to happen. About 45 mins in, I closed my eyes and capped them with my hands. And alas, there seemed to be some faint patterns emerging in the dark. This was way more interesting than the phone. I turned off all lights and watched.

Incredible intricate and delicate patterns were forming, sometimes with letters or formulas on it, sometimes with tiny specks of color. I realized that the eye of the mind has no bounds. I saw things that were so tiny and complex I’d never have been able to see them with my natural eyes, ever rebuilding and changing. It’s not possible to put this into words that do the experience justice.

A good hour had passed.

I turned the lights back on again. Just looking at my bedsheet, had the impression my vision has changed. I saw incredibly sharp and detailed, as looking through a magnifying glass. And as I watched, it started moving. The bedsheet became a plane that seemed to be pulled from unseen forces. Intrigued, I started looking at stuff and everything I focused for some seconds came to life. The floor had tiny thingies constantly moving under a seemingly transparent surface. The wooden door had a threedimensional structure popping out of it, pictures moving on their own, ornaments – I understood now the „magic“ part of magic mushrooms. It truly was as if I’m in a magical wonderland. Seeing myself in a mirror, even my shirt with a floral pattern on it was vividly changing. Having open eye visuals for the first time in your life is completely mind boggling awesome.

Then I decided to go outside for a walk. It was dark, it had rained before, the cars were still wet with droplets of water on them. I noticed that everything looked different. Like, hyperrealistic - hyper-sharp and with vivid colors I haven’t seen before. The droplets of water... I reminded myself not to stand too long and just look at random cars because it may seem weird.

Trees. Trees are so effing amazing. As I watched, they turned into things from an alien world, as my mind added details. Everything „nature“ was just looking wonderful. Somehow more three-dimensional, vibrant. I decided to walk to a nearby forest. The path was nearly completely dark. Yet on my way I saw some strange glowing objects. Checking… yes, no hallucination, they were really there. I feel the cold under my fingers. Just humble stones. But how and why were they glowing, as if emitting their own light? Still puzzles me.

After entering the wood, almost complete darkness encompassed me. Only the starry sky threw some faint light through the canopy. And what I didn’t see with my eyes, my mind filled in with changing patterns, some biological, some mere fractal patterns. This was one of the most magical moments. I belonged to the wood, I was a part of the wood as if it were my home, and it constantly changed just for me.

Then I decided to return home, not far away. I may note that during the whole experience, as wondrous and magical as it was, I didn’t lose the knowledge of who I was, where I was, and what I had taken . If need be, I would even have mustered the control to speak some words to someone without appearing weird. But thankfully, I met nobody.

A look on the clock showed me that I was now between 4...5 hours in. The peak seemed over. The open eye magic didn’t work as before. So I decided to go back to darkness. The closed eye visuals were still going strong. Did I mention that the eye of the mind has no limits? Not only the incredible level of detail, some objects even had colors so intense and pure I don’t think an equivalent exists in the real word. Just beyond beautiful.

Could watch for hours, but alas, slowly, I sensed tiredness creeping in. This was annoying. Felt like an intruder.

I decided to play a mobile game because I didn’t want to sleep yet. The heightened visual acuity and the vibrant colors were still present, and my mind my have added a thing or two. Wish the devs could have seen how their game looks with some neural post-processing. I wasn’t just playing a game, I was in the game, part of it, and everything looked so brilliant, with striking colors. I didn’t even matter if I won or lost – didn’t fare too bad actually – but the experience was intense.

Finally, I decided to call it a day, giving myself in to sleep. The CEV were still not gone, and not even after I woke up somewhat later. Must have been about 8h in.

Now it’s a day later and the magic is gone. But it lives on in my memories, and some day in the not too distant future, I may open the door to the wonderland again. Still having some afterglow and remnant euphoria on me. Feel gifted, mentally fresh, like something has been renewed.
