I remember the metallic taste in my mouth when waking up
I've been suffering with insomnia for a while, so have been using 2mg Melatonin for around 1-2 months at night. I saw my psychiatrist recently and discussed my sleep issues, so was prescribed 7 x 7.5mg Zopiclone to last a month. I've had experiences with Zopiclone in the past on previous psych ward admissions, so it's not a new drug to me. I recall feeling a bit high and spaced out when I took it in 2013 and again in 2016, but this might have been due to me being underweight and the drug having a stronger effect. Bear in mind that I was in the psychiatric hospital on those occasions, so probably not in the best mindset.
I remember that the tiredness came on quite suddenly and I started to feel quite relaxed, not dissimilar to taking a benzodiazepine. My experience has been that Zopiclone is good for getting to sleep, but not always the best for sleep-maintenance insomnia. I have taken a 3.75mg dose on occasion and have woken up after a few hours, being unable to sleep.
The second night I took Zopiclone was on a Saturday morning at around 4:45am (28th June 2025). I had taken my usual dose of Risperidone 1.5mg, Mirtazapine 30mg and 2mg Melatonin at around 10:45pm, but after six hours, I had still not fallen asleep. On my first try of Zopiclone, I decided to skip the Melatonin and still slept well. On my second attempt, it took about 2-3 hours for the sedative effect to kick-in before I fell asleep.
After my first dose, I waited three days before I took another dose, and I could sense that I was suffering from insomnia in-between doses. This could potential lead to compulsive redosing.
In retrospect, since it's been about 3 weeks since my last dose, I would say that Zopiclone is good for occasional use. For example, maybe after a sleepless night, but is not really suitable for longer than a few days at a time. One side effect that I did experience a few days after my last dose was palpitations and the feeling of a racing heart, which I could potentially put down to withdrawals from Zopiclone. However, I suffer from these occasionally anyway, even without having taken Zopiclone, so it may not be due to the drug.
