I first experimented with uppers in my junior year of high school. I did a lot of coke for a few months, then there were some problems where the supply was coming in, and it was a lot easier to get meth (In Minnesota where I live we call it glass if it’s good or crank if it’s dirty). Glass is about twice as expensive as coke, but the high is way more intense, and lasts a whole lot longer too.

I wasn’t really a “druggie” at this point. A few close friends knew I had dabbled in mind-altering substances, but I had straight A’s and didn’t hang out with druggie kids. I was also in sports (wrestling and track), and my biggest wrestling buddy was a bit of a criminal. He told me he could hook me up with some snow one day after practice, and so it began.

I blew a good chunk of my hard-earned money from my summer job on coke. I could cut a lot of weight for wrestling with it. I would jokingly refer to it as my “Columbian weight-loss technique”. This was probably not a very healthy thing to do.
At first I just bought it by the quarter-gram for $25, but for the amount I was using, I started buying 8-balls and doing a lot of small-time dealing to other kids. I made most of my money back this way. I really felt like a big balla for a while. I always had money for whatever and coke for whenever.

Pretty soon whenever turned into always though, and I started snorting so much I couldn’t make a profit. I would always get nosebleeds at random times. I started drifting away from my clean image. I was losing money fast.

Somewhere during this time I tried glass. It was insane. The high from a few little shards hit like a couple big lines of coke and lasted for hours. I am a fairly small-framed kid. I could fly for a couple days on a $40 quarter-gram bag of glass. I always smoked it. My buddy hooked me up with a glass pizzle. I learned to roll it just right in the bulb so it wouldn’t burn. I loved watching the smoke roll up into the bulb and through the tube. My head rushed. I was taking calculus and chemistry at the time and could study all night long. I would actually be pissed off when there was no more homework to do.

I sometimes went on weekend binges when I first started. I am a shy kid. For the first time of my life, I could have really long, entertaining conversations with people I didn’t know very well. Though the high was better than coke, the comedowns were much worse. One time I stayed up for a whole weekend. When you smoke glass it has thing where it kinda crystallizes in the back of your throat. It also really fucks up your immune system and body chemistry. I was out of commission for almost the whole next week due to major inflammations in my tonsils and soft palate and strep at the same time. I laid off glass for a good while after that.

I didn’t sell any glass. Never bought more than a half-gram bag at once. I was spending a lot less money than I had during my coke days. Eventually, I started doing less and less glass. I have not done any drugs for several months now, though I still get cravings some times. I will probably use glass again, but I hope I can stay away from cocaine forever.

I honestly believe that glass helped me kick my coke habit. I think this is partly because the effects of glass are felt for such a long time and because the comedown is so much more extreme.

Of course, I cannot say that this is the best way to kick a cocaine addiction, or if it will even work, but it sure helped me. I really don’t think I am addicted to meth. I can and have been staying away from it for some time now.
