I've been taking Lexapro 10 mg every morning for depression for the past five months. My mood is much better; I remember things, particularly numbers (previously I forgot all numbers instantly). No more emptiness inside. No more arguments with parents; people were not pissing me off anymore; got well with my co-workers (I lost my job later for other reasons). Now the long-term side effects (the short term side effects were nausea and headache which went away after a few days): insomnia, fatigue in the afternoon, apathy (can sit watching TV for hours and not getting bored), no interest in sex at all, frequent (3-4 times) nightly urination (I feel that I can't get all of my urine out in one time), and easy bruising (no contact sports). Note also: avoid eating lots of chocolate while on Lexapro; some people get hives.

To get rid of insomnia, which is made worse by the nightly visits to the bathroom, I tried Ambien (5 mg), Sonata (10 mg) and Restoril (15 mg). Not good in my mind. Ambien worked short term (5 days) only; then, it stopped working. Sonata gave me 2-3 hours of sleep at a time and then I couldn't fall asleep unless I took another pill and then yet another. With Restoril I had a great night's sleep two nights in a row, but on the morning of the third day, I had a severe diarrhea (6 bathroom visits in half-hour) and I had to stay close to the bathroom for the rest of the day. Against my psych's advice, I've been taking Xanax .5 mg every night for the past three months and it works great for insomnia -- almost a full night's sleep. I get a prescription for thirty 2 mg pills and take .5 mg at a time -- the pill is multi-scored and easy to split.

My psych added Wellbutrin SR at 100 mg to give me some energy and get back my sex drive. I've been taking it for the past two weeks. Although 100 mg SR is the starting dose, it keeps me focused and has made me friendly and, more importantly, horny. Got to take it with food (it tastes awful, don't chew it), and about an hour after Lexapro. The long-term side effects are: I must remind myself to eat and drink (although it's not widely publicized, Wellbutrin is also prescribed for weight loss). Insomnia has been made worse, but thank God for Xanax. (I also tried Wellbutrin XL 150 mg/daily but it's really bad at night because I can just forget about sleeping. I also tried regular Wellbutrin 75 mg for a few days, but didn't like it; I felt good while it worked, and down when it stopped.)

Overall, a good combination which I highly recommend: Lexapro 10 mg. In the morning, followed an hour later with Wellbutrin SR 100 mg, and finished at night with Xanax .5 mg.
