I had first heard of Salvia from a Terrence McKenna lecture...he described it as briefly going into hyperspace. A temporary, but perfectly legal view into the Other Place.

I began my hunt for Salvia immediately. After buying and trying nearly ten different types with no effect, I gave up on it.

And then...

A friend of mine was at the local 'head' shop, and recommended that I try this 'new stuff' called salvia. It was, he recounted, some pretty amazing stuff.

For the last time, I told myself. The very last time that I'd buy Salvia. I'm glad that I did. I took it home, and there it sat for nearly two weeks until I felt that the time was right. I ate very little that day, mostly just fruit and water. The evening was quiet and still. I sat down on my futon and loaded the pipe.

When I got the initial toke into my lungs, I noticed that my saliva glands went crazy. I immediately got a mouth full of stringy mucus, and my throat was irritated. This effect was less noticeable by the second toke, and by the third, it was completely gone.

My initial reaction was that nothing was happening. About the time I was taking my second toke, I thought that I should pass the pipe over to Margaret and Jay. It was Margarets' birthday. I turned and realized that not only did I not KNOW a Margaret or Jay, but that I was completely by myself.

I found it hilarious, and appreciated it as though it was a well-thought out practical joke. I took one more toke (the third) and gingerly placed the pipe on a nearby end table. As I sat back, I felt drawn up, and rather quickly. I closed my eyes against the slight strain of travel, and found myself emerging above an enormous house-sized leaf.

The leaf was phosphorescent, each vein glowing a nice orange hue. There was house on the leaf, with a knitted 'Welcome' mat. The mat seemed familiar, like an old favorite childhood toy. It was knitted, and the words seemed to lead me inside. In the house were two young men, and an older motherly woman.

The woman stared at me until I took cover under their kitchen table, and the boys laughed. The woman laughed too, and told me to quit joking around. I came out, and she chided me for waiting so long to come back home.

I got the impression that Salvia was speaking to me directly, and was drawn out of the vision just as quickly as I entered it. As I came down, I apologized for nearly two minutes, saying 'I'm sorry, I'll come back more often...I'm sorry, I've missed you too...'.

And I did. I missed them, and the experience of them. People I had never met in life, but seemed so incredibly familiar. It had been years (nearly 6) since I had last done a hallucinogen, but it was like a homecoming.

Besides the slight throat irritation, I enjoyed the Salvia train. I can't see it being of much recreational use, but it's an interesting study of self-discovery.
