Today, I tried something new and interesting. I had heard of the supposed psychoactivity of petunias and became curious as to their effects. I had heard of 3 different methods for consuming the plant: 1.chewing/eating the flowers/foliage, 2.smoking the flowers/foliage and, 3.drinking a tea made from the flowers/foliage. I picked 6 large, dark purple, velvety flowers from my neighbor's garden and dried them somewhat in the microwave using low heat. There was a small amount of moisture left in the flowers because I planned to smoke them and wanted a smoother smoking experience. I loaded 2 dried flowers into my pipe and blazed. The smoke had an initially unpleasant taste (lack of smoothness due to being so fresh and not properly cured for smoking) but the undertones of the smoke were pleasant and very flowery. It is almost sweet with a grape-like flavor. The more tokes that I took, the more I noticed and enjoyed the flowery flavor. After just a couple of tokes, I felt a head change which was neither pleasant nor unpleasant. I noticed increased lethargy and a 'dazed' feeling. As I completed the pipe, I was sure that this plant is psychoactive. The effects are unlike cannabis. There was no increase in mental activity and, in fact, I felt mentally retarded whilst under the influence of the plant.
I felt mentally retarded whilst under the influence of the plant.
Five minutes after completion of the pipe, I started getting occasional and mild 'adrenaline rushes'. They felt similar to the rushes felt whilst using yohimbe. This is kind of unpleasant and even startling at times. Within 1/2 hour, I felt more or less normal but with mental cloudiness and slight confusion. In other words, the feelings of retardation persisted.

At this time, I decided to make a tea out of the remaining 4 dried flowers. I boiled some water, then added the flowers after crunching them a bit. Immediately, the water took on a beautiful blue color which got darker as the tea steeped for a couple minutes. I strained out the plant material and poured the beautiful blue (think 'Romulan Ale') tea into a coffee mug to cool. The tea had a slightly flowery aroma. Upon drinking the tea, I noticed the same flowery/grapey undertones that I enjoyed whilst smoking the material. The tea was easy to drink and tasted mild despite its dark color. 1/2 an hour later, I started to feel the effects which were as follows: feelings of confusion, sleepiness, decreased mental activity, slight heaviness in limbs, and more severe 'adrenaline rushes' than before. I went to sleep about one hour after drinking the tea due to the fact that I felt like crap. I had more 'adrenaline rush' feelings as I was lying down, trying to sleep. Sleep came easily, however and I woke up for work 7 hours later feeling like complete crap. I was groggy beyond belief and I felt a little bit dehydrated as well.

Though I experienced definite psychoactive effects from the flowers, it was not at all pleasant or recreational. The tea looks totally cool, however and has a pleasant flavor and aroma. I will experiment further with smaller doses of flowers for the tea in order to get a colorful and flavorful product that causes little to no effects. Peace.
