DOSE:
1 hit smoked Salvia divinorum (extract)
BODY WEIGHT: 160 lb
Not long ago, I purchased 1g of 40x standardized Salvia divinorum extract from a local headshoppe. It was overpriced, but I bought it anyway. I attempted to smoke it several times out of a standard glass pipe, but no mind-blowing effects were achieved. Not wanting to waste any more of my money, I took the remaining .5g (I used a scale) and loaded into the slider of a $200 bong, complete with ice chamber. There were about 10 people in the room, and we turned off the lights and put on some sort of kaleidoscope program on the computer. Everyone remained absolutely quiet and still in this little room. There was barely any room to move about. I let my friend Walter take the first hit. As the primary trip sitter, this is what I observed:

Walter consumed an EXTREMELY large amount of green salvia smoke, and held it for about 30 seconds. Then he exhaled, and we told him to put the expensive glass bong down on the desk. Walter was sitting in a leather swivel chair. 'How do you feel?' I asked.

'Weird, man... This is so fuckin' weird...'

'You think you could handle more?' I queried.

'What? (uncontrollable laughter)!'

'Of the salvia? You think you could take another hit?'

'(Uncontrollable laughter)!'

For the next two minutes or so, Walter would smile, kick his legs out, and raise his arms in the air. Then suddenly, he dropped his head down and remained absolutely still. He seemed to have no idea of what was going on around him. 'Walter?' I said. 'Walter? You OK?'

Suddenly he fell off the chair onto the ground. At least he was breathing. 'Take it easy, man... Careful now.'

Walter smiled, then leaned into me to try and bite my finger.

'Walter! No! Don't bite my finger!'

He got sorta scared and layed down on the floor. You could tell he was losing touch with reality. Some people in the room started whispering.'Who's calling?' asked Walter.

'No one's calling,' answered Logan, Walter's roommate. 'You're fine, man. I'm your reality.'

'WHAT?' Walter asked, in a terrified tone.

'Just enjoy yourself, man,' I said.

'Yeah, just enjoy yourself,' echoed Logan. Walter started to mumble and scurry around on the floor. 'Walter, it's OK. I'm real. I'll help you. I'm Logan. Remember Logan?'

'NO!'

'You don't remember Logan?'

'NO!'

'Ok man, calm down. It's alright.' Walter smiled vaguely again and then grabbed onto Logan's leg and attempted to bite him.

'No Walter, No! Don't bite me!'

He seemed to be coming out of it a little. We relaxed and became a little too trusting. Suddenly, Walter stood up and bolted out of the room. Everyone just looked at each other blankly, not really sure what to do.

'Somebody needs to get him back in here,' Logan said. You could hear Walter freaking out in the kitchen. He had ran up to his grandparents, yelling and screaming and begging it to be over. It was difficult to tell what he was saying. 'What did you give him?' asked Grandma. We were afraid to answer. Just about everyone had gone out into the hallway/kitchen. Walter leaned up against a wall and crashed onto the floor.

'Tell me when it's over!' he yelled. 'Just tell me when it's over!'

'Walter,' I said. 'This lasts about 10 minutes max, and you're already at least 5 minutes through it. You've only got 2 or 3 minutes to go.'

'Ok...' he said, and he relaxed. Suddenly he gained a sane look in his eyes.

'You Ok now?' asked Logan.

'Holy Shit!' Walter exclaimed. 'Holy Shit! Oh my God! I am never doing that again! Never!' But he was smiling.

'Good,' said Grandma, 'You're too smart to use that drug.'

'Oh my God... That was the hardest I've ever tripped!'

'Tell us about it,' I said.

'Ok, I looked around... And I thought everything, the entire universe, were pictures in a book. And everyone in the room just disappeared. Then I saw Logan, but hundreds of him, and then they all disappeared, too. Then I realized that the book was about to be closed. I could see the cover coming down. I tried really hard to hold the cover up so that we wouldn't get crushed. I reached up and grabbed the cover to try and hurl myself on top of it-'

'That was my leg!' yelled Logan. 'You tried to bite me?'

'Really?' Walter replied. He decided maybe he'd try it again one day.
