Citalopram for Bipolar

SSRIs can be a horrible choice for anyone who is bipolar. If they must be administered, the patient MUST be closely observed as antidepressants can throw a bipolar individual out into left field.

I first started taking Citalopram in the winter of 2007 in conjunction with a respectable dose of lithium (1.0 blood level). The first night I took Citalopram was immediate hypomania. I didn't sleep at all and I felt full of power and energy. When I did finally go to sleep my dreams were colorful and they felt as if I had lived them. My experience was going pretty well, despite the fact that it took me upwards of one hour to reach an orgasm.

I must say that I was only on this drug for about two and a half months. The first three weeks were very exciting, full of new ideas and ambition, but the middle part was boring. Nothing really happened. I just grew more and more depressed.

Finally, in late April I entered a state of highly suicidal depression in which I was telling loved ones how I intended to murder myself. I was having a great deal of trouble in school as well. I could not sit still in a classroom, everything felt like it was attacking me. I fell into the category of those who rapid cycle on antidepressants.

I called my doctor as soon as I could and we made the switch over to Lamictal. One year and half later I am still on Lamictal and although my problems with mania have gotten worse, the depressions have been curbed.
