Recently I tried guarana. I am quite into my plants, and read up on it, and was interested in its high caffeine, stimulant properties.

The first time I took it, I mixed a heaped teaspoon's worth with some fruit juice and drank it down. A little bitter but not that bad, a lot more palatable than some other plant concoctions out there.

I was doing physical work, moving lots of stuff down from the attic so insulation could be put it. It got to 3:30 in the afternoon before I realised that I hadn't eaten anything at all. This was a revelation in itself as usually I would be crashing big time without eating at all by that time of the day, especially when working hard.

. Now, I am a champion sleeper, I pride myself in my ability, and my love of sleep. This is the only side effect I got, there was no anxiety or anything, but it was highly detrimental nonetheless.

I took guarana as a study aid at university. However, the insomnia got worse and worse, and I couldn't get to sleep until 4 or 5 in the morning, which really messed up my sleeping patters, and made me feel rotten. Instead of an aid, the guarana was a bit of a curse. I have discontinued using guarana and am still recovering my sleeping patterns.

I strongly suspect taking more than required doesn't increase the beneficial effects, and just increases the side effects.
