DOSE:
1 bowl smoked DMT
    smoked Cannabis
BODY WEIGHT: 140 lb
A little bit of background first of all. I have experienced with my share of recreational and psychedelic drugs including mushrooms, lsd, nitrous oxide, mdma, and cocaine on one occasion. Smoking DMT, however, was by far the most intense trip I've taken thus far.

My experience is drawn from two occasions, providing sort of a cautionary note on dosage. The first time I smoked DMT I hit the powder substance out of a bong - comfortable setting, on my living room couch, good music. Immediately I felt the effects, closed my eyes, leaned back and felt like I was soaring. I would compare the first minute of DMT as being slightly similar to the 'wah, wah, wah' effect one feels after doing nitrous oxide, except instead of leaving it at that, I started to experience visuals along with a completely foreign sensation within myself. Completely unrecognizable to anything I had done before. I opened up my eyes and looked around the living room, almost everything I saw was sort of melting in a way, with the wavy effect I can only compare to coming down off LSD. When I realized the intensity of my visuals, I asked aloud to my friends in the other room if this was ever going to end. Before I got an answer back, I was clear again. 5 minutes after inhaling the DMT, I got up off the couch, feeling nearly completely sober, and went outside and smoked a cigarette. Slightly curious about my experience but pleased that it wasn't quite as intense as I had expected...Until a week later, when I tried it one more time.

This time, I was in the exact same setting - my living room at home. My friend packed a bowl of DMT for me (this time out of a pipe) with a little bit of Cannabis on the bottom. Now here is the lesson: I don't really have any idea just how much was packed into the pipe before I hit it, but I went into the experience assuming that it would be similar to the first time, I was extremely wrong. I believe this is because the second time I smoked a much higher dose. I hit it fresh, lit the bowl entirely, and held it in. Just as I was letting the remaining smoke out of my mouth, I looked down at my arm and hand holding the pipe. It looked like I had the arms of a goblin-like creature, as if I could see my bones, my arm twisting around in front of my eyes. At this point I hit the pipe one more time, knowing that I would soon likely be in a sense, blacked out. I was right.

After I took the second hit everything went dark for what I can imagine was about a minute, I felt like I was laying down but apparently I was sitting down. For a moment I was terrified, I had slipped into something so unknown to me that I couldn't even begin to analyze it, I kept wondering why this was so different than the first time I had smoked DMT not even a week earlier. In my confusion, I opened my eyes and sat with my mouth open absolutely gaping at what I was seeing in front of me. Apparently I kept double taking. I couldn't talk, though I tried. The first words I could make out were to my friend sitting next to me who had packed the bowl, I asked him just how much was in there, still feeling completely lost. It took me a lot longer to come out of the trip the second time, for a few minutes I just sat on the floor in between my two friends attempting (and failing) to explain what I was seeing. I was repeating things like 'Okay...wait...no...listen...alright...wait...no...okay'. I believe that my visuals had something to do with the fact that I had just watched Across the Universe a few days before, much of what I was seeing in the living room was similar to the imagery in the 'Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite' scene in the movie, including the strange clown-like figures that pop out sideways from the walls. Eventually, within perhaps at most 15 minutes I came to almost completely, I'll never forget the feeling of relief I felt when the visuals started to die down and things looked 'normal' again.

Don't get me wrong, DMT is a crazy trip, but I've done it twice now, and whatever uncertainty / curiousity I had after the first time was completely answered by my second trip. Needless to say, I won't do DMT again. I went into the trip assuming I knew what it would be like because I'd done it before. While I had an alright experience overall, for a little bit of it I was terrified, just because what I was experiencing was way more intense than I thought it would be.
