Citalopram and Sex

When I was growing up, I had the teenage blues. I was smoking pot and failing school and generally not feeling very good. I went to the doctor and was prescribed various medications for it. I had a run on Prozac, Zoloft, Avanza, Effexor and a few others. The side effects were what made me chop and change, and eventually I gave up the idea of curing my soul (so to speak) by way of pharmaceuticals.

The weirdest side effect by far that I experienced was from cipramil (citalopram). After taking my daily dose for about 4 or 5 days I began to feel quite randy, I would say obsessed with sex. My poor girlfriend at the time didn’t know what to do, as I wanted sex five or more times a day. I thought constantly of sex. I went from being pretty much near impotent to a fiend. After sex I would often want it again, straight away. Perhaps I was making up for lost time. I wouldn’t recommend it. It sounds all well and good but was actually quite frustrating. I stopped taking my medication and went back to the doctor and got a change to something else, I don’t remember what.

This by far was the strangest reaction I have ever had to medication, and I have met another person who reported the same effect. I think this needs looking into more and studying.
