I used to drink heavily to fall asleep. This was good for a few years, but then I tried melatonin.
I generally take one 5mg tablet at night about a half an hour before bed, but sometimes I take two if I feel particularly awake. Most of the time it hits me all at once after laying down for several minutes. Just a strong urge to close my eyes and drift off. I frequently have dreams on the back of my eye lids (you know, dreaming but still aware of what's going on around you. GF shifts, dog farts, you hear it ;-) ) prior to falling asleep. I can 'suggest' or 'guide' them, but it's far from lucid. I've had the occasional lucid dream since taking melatonin.

Many of my dreams are just very vivid, although sometimes difficult to recall if the last one is particularly eventful.
Over all, melatonin generally helps me to fall asleep quickly and get a good deep sleep. Caffeine can directly counteract this, however.
There is nothing recreational about it. It just supplements my body's melatonin to tell you it's bed time.
