DOSE:
1 hit smoked Salvia divinorum (extract)
BODY WEIGHT: 180 lb
I’m an experienced traveller with many substances and experiences under my belt. I bought salvia as it remains legal and I was curious. I have no illusions that it is safe but I was in need of some journey experience. I purchased a 13x extract and smoked one bowl via a water pipe and held it in as long as I could. The smoke wasn’t too harsh but I wasn’t able to hold it in long.

I was sitting on the floor and put the pipe aside, waiting for the effect. I’d read about this and seen the videos so I had some idea what to expect: crazy geometries and a possibly terrifying but brief experience. It delivered on all accounts. I did not feel the drug come on, I was simply in the experience before I knew it.
I did not feel the drug come on, I was simply in the experience before I knew it.

My visual field seemed to flatten into a left and right plane, like hallway walls, extending away and in front of me. The left and right sides of these walls spun slowly in opposite directions. I lost all track of reality in an unpleasant way. Normally when I lose reality in altered states the effect is beautiful and profound. I can see the universe in a new way that reassures me. Under Salvia, the effect was a deep fear that everything was intricately connected and fragile and that any movement on my part might shatter reality or hurt other people; people that I love. I don’t know how long I spent on the floor, unclear where reality and I separated and what kind of danger I posed to the world. It seemed to take ages before I started to slowly rebuild the walls of my ego. Unlike the onset, the regrounding processes was slow and difficult. It couldn’t happen fast enough.

My desire to stand was intense and I did before I probably should have as the comedown seemed to pulse in slow waves. There would be a lull giving me confidence, then another wave of effect. Once I was up, the first thing I did was throw out the vial of remaining material and utter the words, “Never again.” I then noticed I had spilled the water out of the pipe even though I don’t remember moving at all.

Salvia is a fascinating material. It is terrifying and fast but the effects are unlike anything I have ever experienced. The visual effects are utterly unique. The speed of onset is a scary and calculating a correct dose extremely difficult. It is also the only substance I have ever taken where I felt I could be a danger to myself or others.

Do not treat this as a party drug. Get a sitter. If I ever take it again, I’ll be lying down on the floor in a sleeping bag, making it difficult to get up before I’m absolutely ready.
