I've been meaning to write about this here for several years but usually just end up deleting it after I write it. This took place between 2003 to 2006.

I had not been a stranger to hallucinogenics. I had done a wide variety in my time some of which would be more like a toy and others that would alter the way I deciphered reality. 5-MeO-DMT fell into the latter category.

I knew it would be short lasting but very intense, which suited me well enough at the time. I didn't bother with a trip sitter.

It began by procuring a large amount for personal usage (about 1500 mgs) that I would experiment with over time. The first time, I meditated off and on for several days and when I finally was in a good mood and reasonably healthy feeling I decided to try it. I didn't have a scale that was sensitive enough to test it at the time so I foolishly eyeballed it. [Erowid Note: Two samples of powder (even of the same chemical) with equivalent volumes won't necessarily weigh the same. For this reason, eyeballing is an inaccurate and potentially dangerous method of measuring, particularly for substances that are active in very small amounts. See this article on The Importance of Measured Doses.] I started with a small grain and freebased it. I wasn't prepared for how fast it would take me. I heard that it was a train ride but really had no idea how fast it would hit.

The first time was terrifying. It felt as if it lasted forever or that I was dead. My vision tunneled, the world slowed to a stop, an amazingly intense hum would grow stronger the whole time, the center of the tunnel danced in a typical psychedelic fashion, minus the colors, the way my body felt was also pretty euphoric. Both of these seemed worth the initial terror but they weren't quite the life altering experience I was lead to believe was possible. That was maybe around 8 mgs.

The second time, I let it lay for a while and later tried it with a trip sitter. I went first but this time I more than doubled up my dosage to expect a much more intense trip. This time, we prepared, we had some classical piano music in the background that in retrospect was a mistake in that the any sound seems like an onslaught on a 5 meo trip . It isn't really a pleasant place to get lost in your mind with that in the background. That aside, it got to a point that I took the hit, collapsed after a few seconds of holding it in. The body high was amazingly intense and the tunnel vision was more intense this time. It may have been the music but eventually I somehow croaked to my friend to stop it.

I laid there in silence while my head exploded with the 5meo high. It was intense, I lay there and let my mind pass through the tunnel portal. I expected never to come back. I later equated it with passing through the light that is reportedly seen before one dies. I saw this other world through the eyes of its inhabitants and felt as if I had lived there all my life. It was fast, I don't remember it but my sitter said I stood on my bed and fell down a few times somewhere along the trip. This one felt strong and life altering.

It went on and my sitter and I traded spots over the next several months. Never mixing it up with other things at the same time though we'd occasional go off and trip on other things that were more like toys.

The larger doses (probably around 40-50mgs) would usually wind up with the tripper spending the trip vomiting while tripping (have a sitter). As the trip would wind down you'd then go and shit out anything left. Far from being horrifying or painful, it was amazingly cleansing feeling. They didn't really last longer but were just more intense altogether.

Anyway, over time, we learned that if we smoked it regularly we'd develop a bit of a resistance and need to take a higher dosage to make it work. This typically went away if we waited several hours or better yet a week or two. There were absolutely glowing trips in that they felt really life altering afterward but most were just terrifying. The really scary ones were when I personally felt I had to consciously remember to breathe and would wind up hyperventilating the whole time.

When we eventually finished this batch up we got others of differing quality. It is much stronger if it is pure white, but it sometimes comes in a yellow color. The yellow one had similar effects but the smoke itself is much more chemically tasting and it usually requires a larger dose. Along the way we also tried insufflating as well (not worth the pain...hardly any psychoactive effects that way).

Other than that, every time the trip hit, it was like renting a near death experience. The tunnel was always there, my mind would slow down, and I would be still. The otherworldly visuals were only there the second time, every other time it was simply the tunnels, the stillness, and the ever intensifying body electricity and sound.

With all that said, it wasn't really enjoyable. It is not a party drug. It was usually terrifying. Every time at some point it felt as if I wouldn't return. I always did though. I learned a lot about myself and my head space. Now very little scares me.
