I'd been reading up a bit about some of the herbal supplements that I happen to have in my apartment, and decided that I'd give the powdered Valerian capsules I have another go. I usually keep them around for times when sleep is elusive, but wanted to see if I could experience some of the nicer side effects that other reports have described from time to time.
About two hours before bedtime, I took five 350 mg capsules of the stuff, preferring not to break them open or smoke them since the taste/smell is already bad enough inside the capsules (something like a combination between dirty feet and the nasty crud you get behind your ears after sweating a lot...not that I have ever tasted either of those, but you get the idea). About an hour into the dose, I started to feel slightly relaxed, and sleepy. This was a fairly noticeable difference for me, since I go through bouts of depression often; things seemed a little more manageable, more distant. I decided I'd like to see this feeling continue, and took another four capsules about an hour and a half after the first dose.
I noticed the effects tapering off just a bit in spite of the repeated dose, and decided I might as well take advantage of the sleepiness to get a good night's rest. My dreams during 7 and a half hours' worth of sleep were very vivid
My dreams during 7 and a half hours' worth of sleep were very vivid
...I still remember them now, almost 24 hours' later.
The real surprise has been how nice my day has seemed today. Like last night, things have seemed much more manageable, even hopeful; I fairly bounced through work. Now, I don't know if it's any lingering effect of the Valerian or just the fact that I got some good sleep
The only side effects I noticed were, upon waking, being much more groggy than usual for a few hours, and a strong, strong taste of the stuff lingering in my mouth. Worthwhile trade, I'd say.
