DXM and Cannabis Introspective
This was my first time really doing DXM, I had done it in very low doses before this, but not even enough to reach the first plateau. I had, I the week leading up to my trip, done a DXM extraction from a bottle of Delsym, a very simple process, rendering me with a small bag of powder containing around 535mg of Dextomethorphan Polistirex, which, after doing some research, I found to simply be DXM HBr coated in an edible plastic for slower release. To counter act the slow release, I dissolved a fourth of my powder in lime juice for an hour and a half to simulate the stomach acid which would normally dissolve the Polistirex. Now to the trip.
First let me mention that I had been almost entirely sober for the last 6 days (other than some sleep medication), and was originally planning to take the DXM with a friend be he fell through for the night, as such I had no real plans on what to do during my trip. At around 9:30 pm I drank the 160mg DXM lime juice shot (which tasted terrible, far worse than lime juice alone), aiming for an upper first/ lower second plateau trip. I figured I might as well start small. And if I got bored I could always smoke some weed.
After ingestion I knew I had 30 – 40 minutes before the stuff started to kick in as per my research I expected a peak at around two hours and a 4 – 6 hour total length. I decided to watch some TV for an hour or so to occupy the time. I don’t know if I was exited or it was the DXM, but the show I was watching simply could not keep me interested, I was just sort of staring blankly at the TV. About ten minutes in I decided to switch to music and browse the internet. About 45 minutes in, I thought I could start to feel some of the drug’s effects, these were very mild however, the music (Pink Floyd) seemed a little different than I had remembered it, slightly better, and deeper. I also had sort of a double vision effect, where my eyes couldn’t seem to focus on anything; I had to turn the zoom up on my computer, just to read webpages, colors also seemed slightly brighter. All of these, however, as I said were very mild, and I was still uncertain as to whether this was the DXM. I tried doing things I had heard were fun on DXM such as dancing and imagining vivid pictures in my head, but I found them mundane and uninteresting.
At around 11:00 the effects had not changed much, at this point I was thinking I should have taken a higher dose, and although I could definitely feel the DXM, and I knew I wouldn’t peak for another hour, I decided to smoke a bowl of cannabis, like I said earlier I had been sober for a few days, so I knew the weed would hit me hard. I smoked a bowl of Medical Marijuana (good connections ftw) and sat back down to watch an episode of jimmy neutron. This is where things started getting interesting. I definitely felt high from the weed, but there was something else too, I couldn’t quite tell what it was, my thoughts began to sort of slow down, and I noticed my short term memory was pretty shoddy. I had almost forgotten about the DXM. I noticed I could sort of feel my skin pulsing and the world was kind of hazy. The episode ended at 11:30 an when I turned on my light and stood up; I knew I was close to my peak.
If you’ve ever seen the movie “Memento”, you know it’s about a guy who cannot make short term memories, at any given time has basically has no idea where he is or what he is doing. This was how I felt now. I kept switching between different tasks and then forgetting I set out to do them. Look for headphone extension cord, walk toward door to use bathroom, get distracted and sit on my bed, get a drink, stand back up, repeat. I sort of stumbled around my room like this for what seemed like about half an hour, but my perception of time was obliterated at this point so it could have been much shorter or longer. From here on my trip is very difficult to remember, almost like a fleeting dream, but I’ll do my best. I noticed at this point I could also feel the momentum of my body as I moved, I slowly swung my body around and felt like I was pushing through syrup, lights were also very vivid an seemed to accentuate everything in the room.
I managed to use the bathroom, and decided to smoke another bowl of weed, and watch a movie. Since I was very disoriented, and was not really aware of my motor skills, it seemed to take a very long time to grind the weed and load the bowl. I also set the bowl down at one point and forgot about it for a while. Eventually I had smoked and was starting “The Big Lebowski”, which I hadn’t watched in a while. It was the greatest movie I have ever seen. I felt as one with the characters, and plot and even the scenery. All the colors were vivid, and every syllable the characters uttered was accentuated. Watching this movie constituted the longest amount of time perceptually, but it is also the segment of the trip I can remember the least of. I remember thinking at one point that the movie must be almost over, and then looking at the time, and seeing it had only been ten minutes.
After it was over I once again turned on my lights and paused to observe the drug’s effects. Even though I was an hour or so past my expected peak, I felt the DXM stronger than ever, I felt at one with my room. I remember at this point definitely noticing the euphoria that I had hear talk about on DXM. I felt very happy and content, and also slightly energized (DXM does have properties of a stimulant). I smoked another bowl used the bathroom and watched two episodes of Futurama, which, in contrast to earlier, seemed to go by extremely quickly. At this point it was about 2:40 AM and although I had heard it was impossible to sleep while tripping, which I very much still was, I decided to go to bed, since it was so late.
I put away my computer and sat back down on my bed with the lights on ready to go to sleep, but I simply did not feel like it. I just wanted to sit there. And I did for at least half an hour. I was still tripping hard, I stared at my multi colored quilt for a very long time and then looked at a Dr.Gonzo illustration on my wall of them driving I a red convertible through the desert. I felt like I was there with them. I closed my eyes and found that I could control very vivid CEVs of basically anything I wanted. I sort of imagined myself inside of a video game, I had played earlier.
A lot more probably happened but I can remember very little, and as the trip went on I can remember less and less. I eventually fell asleep probably close to 4:00 or 5:00 AM, and had some very interesting thoughts, although I have no idea what they were. Then I woke up this morning feeling very tired and disoriented. I felt like I had a slight hangover, nothing too strong though, and actually felt like I was still tripping a little when I woke. It is a couple hours later now and I’m writing this article.
SUMMARY: Overall it was a very interesting experience. I would like to try DXM again at a higher dose, maybe 300mg, but I’m not going to do that for a few months. DXM has been proven to lead to brain damage after extended use, so I’m going to give myself some time to recover before trying again. I think my trip was slightly more delayed than most because of my use of Polistirex as opposed to pure Hydrobromide. The lime juice probably only dissolved some of the plastic. If I do another extraction it will be from Robitussin. I don’t plan to do DXM more than a few times, and spaced out very far apart, but it was very interesting and fun, and well worth my time. One of my friends took 1000mg of straight DXM Polistirex, his fist time, and even though he has a lot of experience with LSD and other psychedelics, it freaked him out really bad, and it took three people over 5 or 6 hours to talk him down. Anyway my trip was an experience I wouldn’t forget, if I hadn’t already forgotten most of it.
