Tonight, for some stupid reason, and on a whim, I decided to take 135mg DXM to get a mild robo experience. I haven't done that in years, so I don't know why I decided to do it now. Anyway, I took the 135mg DXM and started feeling good. After I peaked, though, I was in my kitchen, and had what I assume felt like a mild panic attack (I've never had a panic attack before). It's really hard to describe what that felt like, but if you've had a panic attack, I think you'll know what I'm talking about. I was feeling hot, among many other things, so I quickly exited the kitchen and went outside to cool off in the night air, and drink some water. I sat outside and after a few minutes, my heart rate went down, and the panic started to subside.
As soon as I felt able, I came inside and looked up SAM-e and DXM interactions to discover that this is listed as a moderate risk interaction, with the potential to lead to Serotonin Syndrome. I didn't know too much about Serotonin Syndrome, so I looked it up, and I seem to be displaying symptoms of a mild case of Serotonin Syndrome. Thankfully, though, the symptoms seem to be subsiding, and I am slowly (albeit too slowly for my taste) feeling somewhat better. I looked up the treatments for mild cases of Serotonin Syndrome, and it seems to consist of discontinuing the drugs that caused it and helping the person control agitation, possibly with a benzodiazepene. I'm definitely NOT taking any more DXM or SAM-e today, and I'll probably discontinue the SAMe for a couple of days to ensure my safety. I've been listening to chill music and doing some nice deep breathing to stay relaxed - typing this up on BL helps too, for some reason. I don't have any benzos, but that would certainly be nice. I'm not feeling hot anymore either, but I may take a cool shower later, and I'm going to continue drinking water. I told my roommate what's up, too, and I wrote down what I took (800mg SAM-e per day + 135mg DXM) on my hand in Sharpie just in case anybody needs to know and I can't tell them myself for some reason.
Anyway, from the little bit of research I've done, I think I will be fine. It seems as though mild cases of Serotonin Syndrome resolve themselves within 24 hours of discontinuing the drugs. And again, I am feeling a bit better already. I guess my take-home message, though, is that you shouldn't mix SAM-e and DXM! Don't take DXM if you are on ANY DRUG that elevates serotonin levels. (I already knew you shouldn't mix SSRIs and DXM, I guess I just didn't stop to think - this time.)
Peace
