- Mulungu: The Scoulerine MythSeveral botanical vendors selling E. mulungu products erroneously claim that the primary psychoactive in mulungu is scoulerine, citing "Studies on the alkaloids of Erythrina plants" by Ito et al. However, while that article did find scoulerine in several species in the Erythrina genus, the authors did not examine E. mulungu. A review of several analyses of the isoquinoline constituents of E. mulungu did not find scoulerine listed among known alkaloids. This incorrect citation may have started with the Wikipedia article "Erythrina Mulungu", which was corrected to remove the error in July 2007, and propagated from there.
