Some foxing to extremities, blind impression of an erased pencil inscription to FFEP, very sound, sharp and square otherwise. DJ spine a bit toned, some trivial rubbind to tips, crisp and clean otherwise, now wrapped in mylar. First Edition, printed in Italy. A monumental study of psychoactive mushrooms in world religions with particular attention to Hindu scriptures. Wasson, a retired J.P. Morgan financier played a surprising and outsize role in 'turning on' hippie and counterculture American to psychoactive drugs. Wasson's work first came to prominence in a 1957 LIFE Magaizine expose on cultic use of mushrooms in Oaxaca, coauthored with his wife, Valentina Pavlovna Wasson. It was her discovery of amanita muscaria on their honeymoon in the Catskills in 1937 that first prompted the couple's lifelong monomaniacal mycophilia. Gordon's continuation of their research after Valentina's death is presented here in its most refined form.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. In the drug-conscious sixties academics explored every aspect of the use and impact of a wide variety of hallucinogens. Few however did so more meticulously and with less fanfare than R Gordon Wasson s exploration of the use of magic mushrooms in traditional societies. This is a fascinating and singular work which draws out some remarkable conclusions. This copy is from the library of fellow academic Anthony Storr who reviewed the book when it was issued and a copy of his review is included making this a unique item. Otherwise a near fine copy of the first hardback edition (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1968) in the dust wrapper.
