While tetrahydrocannabinols, the active chemicals contained in Cannabis plants, are Schedule I in the United States (making them federally illegal to cultivate, buy, possess, or distribute), an exception has been made for dronabinol (synthetic THC). Dronabinol is Schedule III when "in sesame oil and encapsulated in a soft gelatin capsule in a U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved product". Dronabinol was moved from Schedule II to Schedule III in July 1999.
