Abstract
Powerful inhibitors of cerebral metabolism in the rabbit are phenobarbital, serotonin, chlorpromazine and 5501 DE [a phenothiazine derivative]. . "Regulators" of cerebral metabolism in the rabbit are meprobamate and prolonged treatment with serotonin or methylandrostanolone. These reduce glucose consumption somewhat and increase the lactic acid and inorganic phosphate content of cerebral venous blood. . LSD and its antagonists: Prolonged treatment with LSD reduced the consumption of glucose and inorganic phosphate, reduces CO2-production and increases lactic acid consumption. The LSD-induced EEG changes are abolished by viadril, methylandrostanolone and 5501 DE, but the modes of action of these substances are not identical. The effect of viadril and 5501 DE, which, given alone, markedly inhibit cerebral metabolism, is superimposed on the effect of LSD, resulting in an enormous reduction in cerebral metabolism. Methylandrostanolone has no such effect.
