“The comparison of the psychotic effect of tryptamine derivatives with the effects of mescaline and LSD-25 in self-experiments”.
Psychotropic drugs. 1957;p460.
Abstract
Intramscular injection of 60 to 75 mg. N-N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and 60 mg. N-N-diethyltryptamine (DET) exerted a psychotic effect within a few minutes. The psychotic effect of DMT lasted about 1 hours, that of DET about 3 hours and those of LSD and mescaline about 8 to 10 hours. . With LSD and mescaline autonomic symptoms preceded the other symptoms; with the tryptamine derivatives the sensory disturbances appeared at the same time as the autonomic symptoms. The perceptual disturbances were qualitatively the same with all substances; only quantitative differences were observed. . The emotional reaction to mescaline and DMT was euphoria, to LSD it was anxiety, to DET it was alternating euphoria and anxiety. . Unlike LSD and mescaline, both DMT and DET caused athetoid, choreiform, compulsive movements. . After a large dose of DMT more 5-hydroxyindoe acetic acid was excreted in the urine than normal. Thus, DMT may exert its effects via 5-hydroxytryptamine.
