“The LSD psychosis. Pharmacological aspects of the LSD psychosis.”.
Chemical concepts of psychosis. 1958;p63.
Abstract
Critical review of findings in animals which may offer an explanation for the psychotic effect of LSD. . LSD apparently does not act on the psyche by affecting cerebral metabolism and enzyme activity or by its antagonism to 5-hydroxytryptamine. . Small doses of LSD in the cat inhibit axosomatic synaptic transmission in specific afferent systems and axodendritic transmission in nonspecific afferent systems and corticocortical systems. . In the rabbit, LSD elicites centrally, sympathicotonia with hyperthermia, hyperglycemia, tachycardia, etc. In the mouse it causes mydriasis and excitement. In the anesthetized cat it elicites contractions of the nictitating membrane and enhances the pressor effect of sciatic nerve stimulation. On the other hand, LSD potentiates barbiturate anesthesia in the mouse and the rat, reduces body temperature and oxygen consumption in the rat and reduces blood pressure, heart rate and the effect of carotid occlusion in the anesthetized cat. In certain tests in vitro and in vivo LSD exerts a slight adrenolytic action. . These findings show that LSD has a certain bivalent effect on the central nervous system, particularly on the autonomic centers. Some of the effects oppose one another. The resulting disturbances of equilibrium may elicit the mental changes.
