“Drugs which stimulate affective behavior. I. Action of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25) against thiopentone anesthesia in dogs.”.
Anesthesia. 1960;15:48.
Abstract
Experiments were carried out to determine whether LSD has an analeptic effect on dogs under thiopentone anesthesia. . In one series of studies, 6 dogs received a lethal dose of 75-125 mg/kg thiopentone rapidly i.v. Artificial respiration [pure 02?] was provided with a positive-negative pressure respirator. When cardiovascular depression, with a severe fall in aortic blood pressure, occured, 50-100 mcg/kg LSD was given i.v. EEG, ECG, respiratory pattern and arterial blood pressure were taken before and during the experiments. Several minutes after LSD the EEG of 4 dogs showed some increase in cortical activity. ECG, respiratory pattern and arterial blood pressure did not change. One dog dies. After a period of 82-168 minutes spontaneous respiration became evident and arterial blood pressure gradually returned to normal. LSD probably accelerated the recovery of the surviving dogs but the effect was not unequivocal. . In another series of experiments one of 2 groups of 5 dogs each received 25 mg/kg thiopentone alone (at a rate of 200 mg. per minute in a 2olution), the other group received thiopentone plus 25 mcg/kg LSD i.v. one minute later. The experiments were carried out 4 times at weekly intervals, each time with exchange of the groups. The average duration of anesthesia was not significantly effected by LSD. The animals which had received LSD seemed to be more alert and were able to walk a little sooner.
