“Self-selected brain stimulation reward threshold modified by drugs”.
Federation Proc.. 1960;19:264.
Abstract
Animals were allowed to self-stimulate certain brain sites by way of permanently implanted electrodes. The animal was able to regulate the intensity and rate of stimulation and, therefore, to select his threshold for rewarding brain stimulation. Electrodes were located in the posterior hypothalamus and midbrain tegmentum of the rat. . I.p. injection of 0.5-1 mg/kg D- and DL-amphetamine, 30 mg/kg phenylethylamine and 1.5-3 mg/kg methylenedioxyamphetamine lowered the reward threshold. 1.5 mg/kg chlorpromazine, 0.6-1 mg/kg reserpine, 4 mg/kg serotonin and 0.01 mg/kg LSD increased the reward threshold or knocked out self- stimulation behavior altogether. 15 mg/kg sodium pentobarbital also stopped self-stimulation at the peak of its action, but the threshold was lowered before and after the peak effect.
