“Panic disorder induced by large doses of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine resolved by paroxetine”.
J Clin Psychopharmacol. 1998 Feb;18(1):95-6.
(+/-)3,4-Methylendioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, 'ecstasy'), a centrally acting sympathomimetic, is gaining increasing popularity as a recreational drug in the United States and Western Europe. The development of panic disorder (PD) after recreational use of MDMA has been described previously. [1-4] In these cases, PD was successfully treated with benzodiazepines, imipramine, tranylcypromine, fluoxetine, and fluvoxamine. [1,4,5] We describe a patient who developed PD after ingestion of multiple high doses of MDMA. For the first time, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) paroxetine was successfully used in such a patient.
