“A review on the use of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25) in psychiatry”.
Harefuah. 1960;58:281.
Abstract
The authors review the pharmacology, psychic effect, indications and theories on the possible action of LSD. . There are differences and similarities between artificial and real psychotic states. LSD does not seem to produce a real schizophrenic reaction, but it opens a way to study a biochemical or pharmacological concept of psychosis. . Ten chronic patients with various diagnoses (e.g. schizophrenia, depression, obsessive compulsion etc. including one patient with congenital heart disease) who had been treated unsuccessfully with various drugs and psychotherapy for some time, were given an average of 100 mcg. LSD i.m. on several occasions. They were followed up for 1/2 year. . In 3 cases only the symptoms of model-psychosis were observed (chronic depressive reaction, character neurosis with obsessive thoughts and state between psychosis and neurosis (borderline case). These 3 patients could be discharged. The other 7 cases were unchanged or showed transient reactions. LSD did not improve schizophrenic patients.
