Abstract
The effects of oral psilocybin (20 mg.), LSD (150 mcg.), a placebo and Sernyl (10 mg.) were examined in each of 8 healthy persons, isolated for 3 hours in a special experimental setting with controlled and diminished sensory input. . Psilocybin and LSD caused hallucinatory and delusional experiences. The effect of psilocybin, was recorded by all 8 subjects as unusually pleasant, in contrast to the effect of LSD which was experienced as unpleasant, anxiety-provoking, and disruptive. The effect of Sernyl was midway between LSD and psilocybin and the placebo had no effect. While the effects of psilocybin seemed more marked in the experimental situation, the effects of LSD persisted with greater severity for the rest of the day. Sernyl seemed nearly ineffective in the experimental situation except for minimal body image disturbances, but with the first visual and proprioceptive stimulation after the experiment. patients were immediately aware of distortions in perception. . According to the authors psilocybin and LSD "act by increasing neural firing in the sensory pathways independent of sensed inputs, while Sernyl decreases sensory activity."
