“Effect of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD-25) on impulse control”.
J.Nerv.& Ment.Dis.. 1960;131:536-539.
Abstract
Thirty-four normal male volunteers receiving LSD and 34 volunteers of a comparable control group without LSD were tested by means of the Porteus Maze Test to assess the effect of LSD on impulse control. Porteus describes the maze test as a test of "social adaptability" or the ability both to inhibit impulsive solutions and to execute critical planning toward the achievement of goals. . Twenty-eight of the 34 persons received 100 mcg. LSD 2 to 3 1/2 hours before the test and 6 persons received 75 mcg. LSD 1 1/4 to 2 1/4 hours before the test. . Significant differences were found between the subjects under LSD and the controls. The difference was even more marked with 100 mcg. LSD than with 75 mcg. The differences in the results were related to a lack of ability to carry out well-planned and adaptive behavior under the drug. Similarities between the test results with LSD and the test results found with lobotomy patients and patients receiving chlorpromazine were discussed.
