Stress causes a lowering of the non-protein bound SH concentration (NPSH) of the liver. By means of its SH group glutathione is effective as a coenzyme in important reactions of the carbohydrate metabolism. In schizophrenia the blood glutathione level is said to be changed and glutathione treatment is said to have a favorable effect. In the present investigations in rats various psychopharmacologic agents (see below) did not influence the brain NPSH but caused the following changes in liver NPSH: . Epinephrine (0.5 mg/kg s.c.) decreased the liver NPSH significantly. . Adrenochrome (16 mg/kg i.m.). The decrease in liver NPSH was not significant. It caused hyperexcitability followed by a hypnotic-like state. . Mescaline (100 mg/kg i.p.): the liver NPSH was significantly low. No behavioral changes. . LSD (2.5 mg/kg i.p.) significantly decreased the liver NPSH. Horripilation and hyperexcitability also occurred. . Serotonin (1.8 mg/kg total i.p.): the liver NPSH was significantly decreased. No behavioral changes. . 5-hydroxytryptophan (10 mg/kg i.p. twice): no significant influence on the liver NPSH. No behavioral changes. . Massive doses of glutathione (50-300 mg/kg i.v.) into rats and rabbits failed to alter the behavioral pattern induced by LSD.
