“Comparison of Two Drugs with Psychotomimetic Effects (LSD and Ditran)”.
J. Nerv. Ment. Dis.. 1964;138:277-286.
Abstract
Ditran is one of the more recently introduced psychotomimetic agents. In common with all other drugs in this group, it has been claimed to reproduce important aspects of naturally occurring schizophrenia, although Meduna and Abood clearly described and designated the Ditran-induced state as a delirium. It is an anticholinergic agent, and its effects are counteracted by tetrahydroaminacrin (THA), a compound with marked anticholinesterase activity which exerts central effects (5, 6). Ditran has also been reported to have a therapeutic action in various psychiatric syndromes.

The present study was carried out mainly to compare the effects of Ditran and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) on two quantifiable behavioral tests. These are the Bender-Gestalt (2) and Draw-a-Person (7) tests, which have previously been shown to be sensitive to LSD (15). The study was also designed to obtain objective data concerning the antidotal effects of THA for Ditran and of sodium succinate for LSD (6). In addition to the behavioral tests, Jarvik's Questionnaire (9) was administered and clinical observations were systematically recorded.
